After today's loss to the BOs, the Nationals sent Kory Casto and Saul Rivera to Columbus, finalizing the 25-man roster. Some surprises:
PITCHERS (12) -- John Patterson, Shawn Hill, Matt Chico, Jason Bergmann, Jerome Williams, Chad Cordero, Jon Rauch, Ryan Wagner, Ray King, Micah Bowie, Levale Speigner, Jesus Colome CATCHERS (3) -- Brian Schneider, Jesus Flores, Robert Fick INFIELDERS (6) -- Dmitri Young, Felipe Lopez, Cristian Guzman, Ryan Zimmerman, Ronnie Belliard, Josh Wilson OUTFIELDERS (4) -- Ryan Church, Nook Logan, Austin Kearns, Chris Snelling Kory Casto goes to Columbus because he had options and the other OF didn't, and to allow him to play every day. Saul Rivera being cut was a surprise, but both Colome and Speigner forced their way onto the club. A week or so ago, Dmitri Young was in minor-league camp and Larry Broadway and Travis Lee were battling for the 1B job until Nick Johnson gets back. Now Broadway is in Columbus, Lee has retired (so he says), and Young is the starting 1B, backed by the versatile Fick. Josh Wilson is another who wasn't really expected to make the team, but played his way on. The veteran D'Angelo Jimenez returns to Columbus, where he played a few years back. Bergmann fills in until Jason Simontacchi gets back. The Nats again start with too many guys on the DL: Nick, Luis Ayala (how strong will the bullpen be when he gets back!?), Simontacchi, Mike O'Connor, Brandon Claussen, Alex Escobar. Is something wrong with their training methods or do they just have an affinity for the injury-prone? |
