Default Leafs re-sign White

$750k next season; $850k the season after, and $950k in the last year of the deal. $2.55M total.

This is a fair deal for a guy like White, and he's worth that money, IMO. He was top five in points among rookie defenders this past season, and has enough skill to show some promise. Yet, at the same time, if he's going to play defense, he better learn the position a little better. He's made some gaping defensive gaffs over this past season - the kind that lost us some games.

At only 22, I don't think it means we should ship him off just yet, but it certainly means he has more to learn before he earns contracts above $1M / year.

Good deal, and a very attractive trade bait, should we need to.

Yea I think that is a good deal for the Leafs and White. God he's as good if not better than Gill, but somehow that pylon makes bookoo $$$.

Go figure that one out

Gill was one of our best defenders for stretches of last year, (beyond the obvious Kaberle and McCabe). He filled in well for us while Colaiacovo worked himself back into game shape from injury.

Once Cola was back, and White began to improve slightly, Gill became what he's best at - a bottom-pairing defender. Given his experience, and the fact that he's good enough to take on third line minutes for short periods of time, (like injury fillins, for example) I don't mind the $2.5M. There are plenty of other veteran defenders out there getting overpaid much more than that.

I'd take Gill over most of them, especially to round out the bottom of our D-lines.

I just wish we'd get a coach to stop playing Belak down there with him...

Belak is the real pylon...
