Sundin surpasses Sittler

"Congratulations, Mats."

The call came from Darryl Sittler from Florida, and Mats Sundin appreciated the long-distance pat on the back after he broke Sittler's goals and points records that had stood since 1982.

"It was very nice of him," Sundin said the morning after making club history during the Toronto Maple Leafs' 8-1 romp over the New York Islanders.

The record feat quickly made it to Sweden, too.

"I talked to my parents and it's all over the news there," said Sundin.

He refused a phantom second-period assist that would've moved him past Darryl Sittler, biding his time for his 390th goal in an 8-1 rout of the New York Islanders, breaking two major club offensive marks on the same play. During one of many standing ovations accorded him last night by 19,400 at the Air Canada Centre, the Swede heard the crowd chant his name as they used to for beloved Canadian-born captains Sittler, Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark.

Capping the historic night at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, public address announcer Andy Frost drew roars of approval from the more than 19,000 fans when he revealed the selection of the three stars of the game as Sundin, Sundin and Sundin.

A round of applause for one of the best currently in the game today.

I must say that i hate Sundin especially as a Habs fan. Congrats Mats and thats about the last time that I will ever say that.
