Leafs' centre Wellwood out indefinitely

The Toronto Maple Leafs will start the regular season without one of their key forwards, as centre Kyle Wellwood had additional surgery on a sports hernia on Saturday.

The team received word early Friday evening that extensive testing had discovered an issue in the same abdominal area that was surgically repaired last season.

"We found out late last night that he was going to require a revision - a surgical procedure on his previous sports hernia," general manager John Ferguson told Leafs TV on Saturday.

"That went successfully today and he's going to be out indefinitely."

Wellwood, penciled in as the Maple Leafs' second line centre this season, missed 33 games last year following a sports hernia operation in January and was hampered by similar symptoms and intense pain through much of this year's training camp.

Yeah, I think he missed part of ONE game in juniors...

This groin injury is his first, and what's happening now is simply the result of the last surgery being unsuccessful. It's not another injury - it's the same one gone unfixed.

Juniors is totaly different hockey.
