Well, not sure how I want to take this. Clayton obviously can't hit period. Although he does have a good glove. I don't get why we wouldn't just give the job to McDonald and bring in a minor league deal type to be the reserve infielder. Its not much money, but it still is enough money that could be useful in other areas. I guess I can't say I agree with this move, but it atleast shouldn't hurt us too much.

Well, he's an upgrade both offensively (slightly below .700OPS to slightly below .600OPS) and defensively over JMac.
JMac defense seemed overhyped. He had trouble playing the position defensively, so hopefully Clayton can fill the spot, at least in the interim.

According to Blair, the Jays signed Clayton instead of a more expensive option because they want to go after TWO starting pitchers...

I was playing around with my signed free agent database to add the new signings and I found something interesting. All the signings in the past few days were bargains (relatively to this market) and if we can hope that Mr. Clayton returns closer to his 3 year avg VORP, probably not since he should be regressing, the guy is a good bargain...the 3rd best bargain of the off-season when comparing 3 year avg VORP to salary. Zauner is also a dang good signing by JP according to VORP, much better than Barajas would have been.

Obviously someone didn't read everything...the reason JP went for a less expensive option is to sign TWO starting pitchers.

I would rather sign Jason Schmidt and use Janssen or Marcum in the 5 hole than to go with Meche AND Lilly.
Plus we'd save about $5 million (Schmidt $13M? Lilly + Meche = $18M?) This rotation: Doc AJ Schmidt Chacin Marcum/Janssen is superior to this one: Doc AJ Lilly Meche Chacin Because Meche = Marcum/Janssen |

Couldn't agree more. If Janssen isn't as good as Meche yet, he will be soon, and at a much lower price. He showed remarkable promise last year.
I have this horrible feeling we'll see Casey Janssen go 15-9 in 2008... for the Oakland Athletics, while Blue Jay Gil Meche wins 7 games and collects $12 million for it. |
