Game 1 Preview

Gustavo Chacin (0-0) 0.00 ERA

VS.

James Shields (0-0) 0.00 ERA

Preview: The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

Quote:
Gustavo Chacin spent the beginning of the 2004 season playing in the Minor Leagues with Double-A New Hampshire, but snow was never an issue.

"It's not like this weather," said Chacin, referring to the cold climate in Detroit on Thursday. "It's pretty cold there, but not pitching in snow -- low temperatures, but never snow."

Flurries were definitely a part of the problem Thursday, when the frigid conditions in Detroit were more than enough for both the Tigers and Jays to agree that postponing their game was for the best. The contest has been rescheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET on Sept. 10.

Even though the weather was unlike anything the Blue Jays starter had ever pitched in, Chacin was still ready to take the mound.

"It's all right," Chacin said with a shrug. "If I've got to do it, I guess I have to do it. But it's better for me [to have the game postponed]."

The only problem is that Chacin had prepared a game plan for facing Detroit, which won the American League title in 2006. Now, the southpaw has to switch gears and get ready to tackle Tampa Bay -- a team that gave Chacin fits last season.

In '06, Chacin made two appearances against the Devil Rays and picked up one loss and a no-decision. Over 11 innings, Chacin gave up eight runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Towers Anxious to pitch

The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

Quote:
DETROIT -- There were plenty of smiles around the visitors' clubhouse at Comerica Park, where the Blue Jays waited for their plane to arrive in Detroit.

On Thursday morning, Toronto learned that it wouldn't have to take the field for the finale of a three-game set against the Tigers. That was great news, considering that the temperature was below freezing and snowflakes were dancing above a tarp-covered diamond.

There was one player who wasn't happy about the development, though. Blue Jays pitcher Josh Towers, who won the fifth spot in the rotation with an outstanding spring, hasn't pitched since March 31. Now, because of the postponed game, he has to wait until Tuesday to make his first start of the season.

"It's just a long time. Who knows how you feel after 10 days?" said Towers, who was originally down to start Sunday against Tampa Bay. "Plus, I'm kind of anxious to pitch. So it [stinks] to have it pushed back, but that's what it is. We could still play. It's a little cold, but big deal."

Towers has already thrown once in the bullpen in Detroit since Toronto's arrival Sunday. The 30-year-old right-hander was scheduled to throw another side session Thursday, but had that canceled due to inclement weather.

After spending a few hours at the ballpark, the Blue Jays left Detroit for Tampa Bay, where they open a three-game series against the Devil Rays on Friday. Towers said he'll throw another side session in Florida in preparation for his first start in Toronto against the Royals.

"I'm going to lead the league in side sessions this year," Towers said with a laugh.

Towers went 2-10 with an 8.42 ERA in 2006 for Toronto, but looked much better during Spring Training. In six Grapefruit League outings, Towers was 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 23 strikeouts versus four walks over 25 2/3 innings.
I understand why he is anxious, I just hope he is better then last year! I am predicting a 8-4 win for Chacin, to bad this game isn't on TV!

What a 7th inning! Johnson, Zaun and Hill all with RBI's in the 7th tying up the game 3-3! Janssen is now in for Chacin, who besides the 3 homers pitched a half decent game. Bottom of the seventh right now, two away, thanks to a DP!

Rays 6 Jays 5

I am so fricking pissed at BJ Ryan right now! We had the comeback right in are hands and he gave it away! On a happier note, tomorrow is the first Jays game I get to watch this year!

The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

Quote:
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- B.J. Ryan hadn't had a blown save in a long time. More than eight months, actually. So it was understandable, then, when he asked for a little extra time to sit and think before speaking with the media Friday night.

So sit Ryan did, silent and red-faced, staring at his locker for a bit before leaving the room, only to return moments later to deliver a harsh oratory of what went wrong during Toronto's 6-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

"The bullpen came in and did their job, and I coughed it up," he said. "There's no excuse for the way I went out there and pitched tonight."

Toronto had opened up a two-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Ryan, the oft-dependable closer who's racked up 74 saves over the last two years, induced a popup for the first out. The trouble was short but swift, with Ty Wigginton lining a single to center, and Delmon Young following up with a game-tying homer to right.

"It was a fastball," Ryan lamented afterward. "[i] pulled a little bit, got too much of the plate and he hit it out of the ballpark."

A bunt single followed, as did a popout and an outfield single, before Jays shortstop John McDonald fumbled a line drive by B.J. Upton and couldn't wing it to first in time, allowing the winning run to score from third.

Game 2 Preview

Toma Ohka (0-0) 0.00 ERA

Casey Fossum (0-0) 0.00 ERA

Game Preview: The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

Quote:
Pitching is always important, but especially so when facing a team such as the Devil Rays. And with a young but healthy lineup ready to face Toronto in the middle of the three-game set Saturday, Jays starter Tomo Ohka will have his hands full.

"If they get guys on, they're going to try to run you out of the ballpark," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "If they get the right guys on, it's a track meet. They've got as much talent as anybody. They're young and inexperienced, but talent-wise ... boy."

It'll be the talented Ohka's first regular-season outing with the Blue Jays, after arriving in camp and going 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in five Grapefruit League appearances (19 innings) with eight strikeouts. The 31-year-old righty impressed all the right people and earned a spot in the starting rotation as a result.

He's been equally impressive against Tampa Bay, having never lost at Tropicana Field (2-0) and holding the Rays to a 0.94 batting average against him there in eight Major League seasons.

What a awsome game for the offence, not so much for Okha. Good to see Thomas hit his first homer as a Jay and it was a grand slam! I'm also gald to see Ryan come back from yesterdays disappointment and pitch a 1-2-3 inning for his second save!

The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

Quote:
ST. PETERSBURG -- Frank Thomas' grand slam gave the Blue Jays the runs they needed in Saturday's 8-5 win over the Devil Rays, but the bullpen was what kept the lead secure.

Four games into the season, and the bullpen has played a factor in every one of them. With Toronto's starters lasting not quite as long as the Jays would like them to, guys such as newly annointed setup man Jason Frasor have already seen action in all four games.

It's a tax that manager John Gibbons doesn't quite want to put on his relief corps this early, but then again, the 2007 season is less than a week old with a few off-days already incorporated, so there's not cause for concern just yet.

"We'll be a little thin tomorrow, no question about that," Gibbons said. "But we've got [Roy] Halladay starting tomorrow and [A.J.] Burnett on Monday. They can eat up some innings for us -- we'll get back on track.

"Still, there's no question -- over time, your starters have got to give you some innings."

The bullpen phone rang early on Saturday night, after starter Tomo Ohka dug himself a hole in the fourth inning and couldn't crawl out, no matter what the right-hander tried. Ohka was working with a 7-1 lead at the time, thanks to Thomas' eighth career grand slam in the second, but nearly squandered it all when the Rays tagged him for four runs in the frame.

"Ohka, he really didn't have it tonight," Gibbons said. "He's a control guy. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that he had eight days off. That really affects control guys."

It's never desirable to have a starter exit in the early innings, but at the same time, it's also the type of high-pressure situation from which innings-eating pitchers like Shaun Marcum and his fellow relievers feed.

Game 3 Preview

Roy Halladay (0-0) 3.00 ERA

VS.

Scott Kazmir (0-0) 9.00 ERA

The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

Quote:
On Friday, the Jays surrendered four home runs to Tampa Bay. A day later, they saw two more from the Rays before designated hitter Frank Thomas stamped the series with his ninth career grand slam.

But if Friday and Saturday were slugging displays, Sunday's series finale at Tropicana Field has great promise to be a pitching showcase.

Toronto will send 2003 Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay, its Opening Day starter, to the mound for his second appearance. Halladay, a righty who went 16-5 a year ago, is hungry for his first win after earning a no-decision at Detroit on Monday. The four-time All-Star threw well in the game, permitting only two earned runs over six innings, but received little run support from his teammates -- who eventually scraped together enough offense to pull off a 5-3 win.

Halladay is 8-4 in 21 career appearances against the Rays, and holds a 3.28 ERA. In addition, he's 6-2 at Tropicana Field.

The Rays will give the ball to their ace, Scott Kazmir, to counter. Kazmir's coming off a rough debut in which the Yankees tagged him for five runs in five innings on Opening Day. The left-hander ran up his pitch count early against the Yankees and battled for control throughout, giving up five runs, walking four and hitting a batter in six innings.

The outing was a far cry from the 23-year-old who had just 52 walks in all of 2006, holding opponents to a .240 average, and Jays fans attending the Easter Sunday matinee shouldn't expect him to be that generous in the future. Kazmir is 2-2 with a 2.87 ERA in eight career games against Toronto.

The Jays are is 84-67 all-time against Tampa Bay, and 1-1 this season.

Which two Devil Rays hit home runs before Thomas hit the grand slam?

Weird summary.

WOOOOOO! Big first win for Halladay on the strength of homers by Johnson and Wells.

The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

Quote:
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Reed Johnson knew the ball was gone when it came off his bat. Pumping his fist in celebration, he tossed the weapon aside and began his first home run trot of the season. Hard hits always feel good, but working a decisive homer off a pitcher on his game like Scott Kazmir was on Sunday made the victory taste even sweeter.

"I was swinging through fastballs all day, just getting a piece of them," said Johnson, who struck out in the first and popped out in the third prior to succeeding against the young lefty. "For [Kazmir] to come at me with that is understandable. I was able to make an adjustment and get my rhythm and get my foot down in time."

The three-run shot came with two out in the fifth inning and Toronto trailing by one, and turned out to be just what the Jays needed to come out on top, 6-3, during a duel of two talented starters.

Toronto struggled with Kazmir early on. Vernon Wells, who homered in the first inning, and Lyle Overbay, who doubled over the wall in center in the third, were the only Jays to touch Kazmir during the first four innings. The 23-year-old collected strikeouts for each of the first eight outs of the game before Johnson popped out to first to snap the streak. He ended the day with 10 punchouts, three against Frank Thomas and two each from Royce Clayton and third baseman John McDonald.

Entering Sunday's game, Thomas had a nine-game hitting streak going against Tampa Bay, and was batting .400 (24-for-60) against Rays pitching since 2004.

"We played a good ballgame, but it wasn't easy with Kazmir," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "He was walking right through us early, he was real good.

"[Roy Halladay] battled the same way. It's the kind of matchup you anticipate from those two guys. They're two of the better arms in the league."
