"According to the Boston Globe, Tomo Ohka is close to deciding on offers from the Blue Jays, Nationals and Pirates. It doesn't sound like he's going to get the three-year deal he'd like. He can either join a contender in Toronto or help his chances of getting a bigger deal after 2008 by staying in the NL." I like this move if the Jays can pull it off. I may like signing Thomson and Ohka more than getting Lilly and Meche, especially when you take money into account. It will be interesting to see which pair of pitchers has a better 2007. ![]() |

I didn't even realize the Jays were talking to him. I guess I have been out of the loop a little bit lately though. What kind of money are they talking about? Similar to the THompson deal?
I like the concept in this market of going after low risk guys who could turn out to be solid mid rotation starters. Welcome to Fanhome. |

Why would Selig be upset with a team in the 4th largest city in the league having a better team?

ESPN.com - MLB - Mitchell asks for increased cooperation from owners
During the meeting, Selig also spoke about the free-agent market and singled out the Giants and Chicago Cubs, among others, for their spending, one official at the meeting said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the remarks during the session were not intended to be made public. Selig also mentioned the Toronto Blue Jays, the official said. |

Come on. Thomas is the only external signing anyone outside of Toronto has noticed, and that was no blockbuster. Tomo Ohka's a 31-year-old pitcher with a career record of 48-58. He won four games last year. If he signs with Toronto it's a footnote. |

Selig's comments might border on collusion, telling teams what they should be spending on free agents, instead of allowing "his" marketplace setting that he negotiated (CBA) take effect.

Do you really think anyone cares that the Blue Jays signed Royce Clayton and Sal Fasano? Ooooh, the Jays are signing castoffs! Watch out!
No, but I really thought I layed the sarcasm on thick enough for everyone to realize it. |

The mystery 4th team sounds a little fake to me. Agents seem to do this all the time. Boras with the Jays and Gagne is one example.
One report today had the Pirates dropping out of the biding. As for money it is a two year offer, my guess 10 to 14 million. I am not sure how good he will be. His control is good but his K rate is bad. He is a 4th starter with good NL ERAs. I think at this point just give the job to McGowan, Janssen or Marcum. |

If the Yankees keep paring payroll, their average salary might drop below half the entire Marlins payroll

Per Rotoworld.com
The Blue Jays and Tomo Ohka have reportedly come to terms on a one-year deal. Ohka declined two-year proposals from the Pirates and Nationals in the hopes that there'd be a bigger market for his services next year. We're not thrilled with his chances of posting a sub-5.00 ERA in the AL, but he still should be a better choice for the Toronto rotation than Shaun Marcum, Casey Janssen or Josh Towers. His addition means that John Thomson will now have more of a battle on his hands as he attempts to secure the fifth spot. |
