Out of Thomson, Okha, Towers, Marcum and McGowan odds are one of them will have a good year. That will give us a solid #4 starter. Odds also are one of them will do so-so. Giving us a solid #5 starter.

The other three will be folded up by July but who cares...all 5 together costs less 5 million. A fraction of what we were willing to throw a free agent #4 starter who probably would have done less here anyway.

We get a #4 and #5 starter for half of just the #4

Jays original plans was to be getting pitching help from the farm by now. But they drafted so poorly in late years it has not been there. That's why so many reclamation projects

The risk, though, is that when you have a whole bunch of pitchers to fill two spots, you might start the year with the wrong ones. If, for instance, they start with Okha and Towers and both get hammered, and THEN switch to Marcum and McGowan, you might already have gotten a 2-9 performance from those two guys and put yourself in a hole. And then maybe Marcum was the wrong choice too, so by the time you finally put Janssen in there he's gone 1-5, and now your #4-#5 starters have put you way in the hole. Having six or seven C-level pitchers and maybe-ready prospects isn't a good thing for a team with virtually no room for error if they wanna make the playoffs, because there's an excellent chance you'll pick the wrong guys coming out of spring training.

And let's be honest; Gustavo Chacin is not exactly a guaranteed thing in the #3 spot.

Honestly, a short leash is the way to go.
Josh Towers of last year should NEVER have happened.
And it would be INEXCUSABLE if it were to happen this year.

Kind of ironic but I have a sneaky feeling I should be worried more about the front end of the rotation rather than the back end

I'd second that sneaky feeling.
We have depth to cover the back end, but if Roy and AJ go down, we are in trouble. And health issues have been sprouting for this team.

This is a result of no help from the farm system

You mean like in 2006, when Josh Towers won more games in Spring Training than he did in the first five months of the regular season?

Don't trust ST stats.

There is always a fluke....that is why JP decided to go with depth this time. Not to be caught short again

Another name has been added to the mix. The Jays signed Pete Walker yesterday. What was the history on him with the Jays? Did he have arm trouble at one time?

Yes, his arm fell off last year. He had rotator cuff surgery in mid-season, and it was assumed that, at his age, it would be the end of his career. It's something of a surprise to see him in the mix. I'm doubtful that he has a chance at the rotation. He may be in the bullpen if he's recovered from the injury, but I don't have high hopes.

Is this a sign of how desperate JP is? Signing a 38 year-old coming off arm surgery?
