Boomer paid Tony Fernandez $500 dollars for hitting a game-winning hit.
Didn't even want to pay him

Ok... based on the clues, I think I know the answer:
I just got back from the Jim Jim-dandy hhmmm... .could it be Jim as in Acker, Key, Clancy or Gott? no one has got this yet I'm guessing Jim Gott, but have no idea why. |

Jim Gott won his first major league game and subsequently was given the game ball of course, the win came against Baltimore, Appearing at ss beginning a consecutive innings record was Cal Ripken. When Cal Ripken broke Gehrig's record, he was presented on National Tv, with...a present from Jim Gott. I knew it was obscure, but, go back and look at the hints, there are several more. I will put up a new question later.

Rick Leach was a Wolverine QB drafted by the Broncos. He was then a 1st round pick by the Tigers to much fanfare, but I don't recall him doing much when he got called up. Did play for the Jays for a few years. I don't recall what his disappearing act was, unless you're referring to his playing skills that got him drafted in the 1st round, only to not be able to be a starter anywhere.
