Go back to 2 weeks ago. Now you have the knowledge that Wells is asking for 18m a year for 7 years and will not budge. What packages would you settle for for Wells?
Would you take Santana, Ervin, striaght up? How about Jared Weaver? Would you take Penny and a prospect other than Kemp/Ethier(sp) Would you settle for a lesser package knowing he was going to command 7/126? |

7/126 is outrageous, but the way it is structured it will only really start stinking in the last 3-4 years of the contract. I don't know what our budget will be like by then, but it better be able to absorb it!
Personally, I would have taken any of the trades you listed, moved Rios to CF and gotten a free agent OF like Nixon. The resulting team could have still been better this year and would have given some playroll flexibility for the future. All of this is assuming that the market cannot possibly get any crazier than this next year and beyond, but stranger things have happened in baseball... |

The real challenge of the contract is how much Teddy forks over. If say we go out and snag a Zito, then the deal isn't that bad. If we now can not sign anyone for the next 3 years, obviously its horrible. I reserve the right to hold off a decision.

Signing Wells is great, and the absolute dollars are, frankly, meaningless. This year's offseason has proven that.
It's the relative dollars that are a concern. How much do we have left, and what can it get in this market? A lot of the trade options are short term deals. Get an arm now type deals, but we are more than an arm away from being a top contender. I think I would just as soon have Wells long term, so am satisfied with the deal. |
