Default Jays Sign Wells- Done Deal

Mixed feelings on this move. Its going to be nice to see his bat in the lineup still.

Yep, going to be nice. And its a good message to any potential FA like Mulder etc out there, that we are going to have a huge offence to support the pitchers.

I see nothing wrong with paying $18m for Wells. He's worth it.

Interesting to note that this is an extension on his previous deal, so we have him signed for the next five seasons guaranteed. A lot of money, but that's due to a crazy market and a pressuring player's association. He's a great player and I'm glad he's back.

My feelings aren't mixed at all. I HATE this.

But, then again, I'm a Red Sox fan, and he absolutely murders us, so I'd love to see him leave and go to the NL.

Seriously, this would be a great move for the Jays. As mentioned, it would be a great message to other players, and in this market, he's certainly 'worth' it.

To all Jays fans, a question. What are they putting into the Molson's? Your team has gone crazy with all the money they are spending. Well is a good player, but he isn't worht 18 million. no player is.

Agree and disagree. Agree in that I think MLB could be shooting itself in the foot with this year's contracts. Agree in that I don't like seeing the Jays spend that much on an outfielder. Disagree in that "worth" is also relative to the market. If players comparable to Wells are getting (or will as of next off-season) contracts that pay $18 mil or more, then Wells is worth it. If you want a player of a certain calibre and of a certain position, you have to pay what it takes to get him.

To go along with stellar D, I want consistent .900 + OPS seasons for an 18M OF.

I could understand that if you were talking about LF or RF. But this is centerfield and Wells is a 3 time (!!) gold glover. You can't take your average RF or LF and put him in CF. Its a much more athletic position. You're under-rating the importance of D when it comes to the position and how few elite offensive players can play it. Tori Hunter, Andruw Jones and Carlos Beltran aren't consistent either when it comes to OPS (though Beltran much more so than any of the 4).

Hunter's career OPS is .786
Jones career OPS is .850
Beltran's is .847

Wells is also the youngest of all 4. Yet Hunter and Jones will likely be making more than Wells in 2008 after their contracts next off-season.

Great move by JP to get Wells resigned. If he goes to free agency I believe he gets more money then we offered him. I honestly didn't think JP could get Wells' contract extended and I'm very glad he did. We add another arm (Mulder please) and we are in great position to make a run at the playoffs.
