http://www.globesports.com/servlet/s...sBaseball/home I can't see Vernon turning a contract like that down, I'm quite stoked the Jays kept the slugger, we'll get pitching from another avenue, more than likely Johnson and some of our young SP's. Jennings was traded to the Astros and Gagne signed with the Rangers. What's your thoughts Folks??? Last edited by TheShaker99; December 13th, 2006 at 06:45 AM. Reason: Grammar? |

I mean, maybe he will. But until you hear confirmation they've signed a contract, it's not a done deal. Wells could get that sort of money elsewhere; if he'd rather play elsewhere, why sign in Toronto? |

Yes, there is no indication that Wells will accept. So it is way premature to start saying done deal.
But it does say a lot that The Jays are willing to make this offer. It appears they are going to make a very strong effort to get him signed, if they can't then I expect they will trade him. |

85 you are obviously against the offer.
I have mixed feelings on it. I like the idea of us keeping Vernon and I like the fact that we obviously have more money to spend than many of us anticipated. But I have never been a big fan of spending that much money on one player. |

I'm also mixed on this, and really can't pass judgment one way or the other right away. Ultimately, a big part of my evaluation here depends on what Rogers' intentions are. What's the actual budget like moving forward? If there's rooms to lock up a franchise player, then it may not be as crazy a contract as it seems. The market is way up this year, obviously. If it's indicative of a new standard of market value, and not just teams spending what money they have, then the contract doesn't seem so bad. If it's more of a spike than real inflation, however, then it would be a burden.
My initial reaction is that it's too much for him, especially given that his year-to-year performance hasn't been consistently elite. Without knowing the budget and Rogers' response to an inflated market, I won't form too strong of an opinion one way or the other. Whether it's accepted or not, I like that offer better than the Soriano or Lee deals, but it'll take a couple years to see if we're looking at a new standard of higher numbers or if it'll simply be the lesser of a few evils this offseason. |

Im glad we're committed to keeping him, however I'd feel a lot more comfortable knowing that this was an EXTENSION, as opposed to tearing up that last year of his contract.
So if we still get him for 5.6 million this year, and then the contract kicks in after that, I would be much happier |

Paul Godfrey has said previously that it would be an extension and that regardless of whether a new deal was signed or not Wells would be at 5.6 Million next year.
Its possible that could change, but Godfrey went on record on that not too long ago. |

I wonder why Wells hasnt jumped at this offer.
He says his first choice is Toronto. $18 million a year is probably on par to what he would get next year as a free agent. But if he waits until next year he's taking a gamble. He could get injured, have a bad season, etc etc. I would think that if he doesnt sign this deal, and plays out the season, there could be some frustration from his teammates as to why he wouldnt accept such a generous deal |

Do we give a huge signing bonus pretty much spending all the money we had on the offseason, but missed, on him? Not the optimum way to do things, but we did miss out and did have tons of money earmarked for this offseason and we do want to retain wells.
A 20M signing bonus would bring his avg salary to around 15.5M a season over the 7 years. I would love to see more deals like Manny R. took where after he retires he gets X million a year for a few years (deferred money) |

Thats a good idea, especially if we have no other place for that money this year, just give it to Vernon as a signing bonus. It alleviates the salary burden in future seasons. And I am sure that Vernon would be in favour of this, who wouldn't want a cheque for $20 Million.

Good thing JP decided until the offseason and the market to explode before entering contract extension talks...
Does the guy ever do anything right? I mean jesus... I figure pure dumb luck would factor in at some point and he'd have something go his way. |

The market by all reports was going to go up.
So why would one of the biggest agencies for baseball players sign their guy to a deal before the market went up? If you know your stock is going to go up would you sell before it went up? Wells agents wanted the big free agent hitters to set the market before they would deal Wells. |
