Default Evan Almighty?!?

The Rays signed him to a nine year contract... He is a week into his MLB career...

Ouch, this is a monumental risk:

what in the world?

Why bear that kind of risk?

although only 6 years are guarunteed

Quote:
The salaries for the first six years of the agreement are guaranteed, with the team holding a one-year option for 2014 season and a subsequent two-year option for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. The contract guarantees $17.5 million. If the Rays exercise both options, Longoria would earn more than $44 million over the life of the nine-year agreement.
I don't get it

OK, here's how I see it: The Rays see him as someone who will only perform and perform well. Despite the risk of a long contract like thsi, they have bought out all his arbitration years and early free agent years.

Where Evan could request high million dollar totals for new contracts in his arbitration years, the Rays are goign to pay him a set price. The team shows faith in Evan, Evan shows faith in the team... It's not megabucks, but for a rookie to get that kind of payday before producing? It shows faith.

Just hope it doesn't add too much pressure.
