Default Rays trading Delmon Young?

Any thoughts on the rumor Delmon Young is going to Minnesota?

He's got talent but he's got noted discontent with regards to the Rays organization as well.

adding more high end pitchers to that rotation is a plus

also note this from the Rays spotlight thread

And Delmon has hardly improved at all over the past two years; for all his potential, he's a hacker who isn't likely to remain a defensive asset for much longer. There's a real chance that he never develops into more than an average player. Using my projections, which see him taking significant steps forward, he's expected to produce an average of 2.53 WAR over the next five years. That's awfully valuable, to be sure... but it's far from irreplaceable.

Obviously, though, the trick is figuring out what pitcher to target. It ought to be someone under contract fairly cheaply for at least 3-4 years, because the Rays have to think long-term... and I just don't know how valuable other teams think Delmon is. I'm guessing that King Felix is out of the question here (as he should be). Ditto Cole Hamels. But Yovani Gallardo might be obtainable. Of course, the problem is that once you get past those guys, there's hardly anyone else out there who would be a sufficient return for Delmon. Chris Young, maybe.

Alternatively, they could go for a lesser pitcher and try to shore up SS. The Twins desperately need outfield help, and Delmon is the kind of toolsy player I'm sure they'd love to have. Delmon for Jason Bartlett and one of Slowey/Baker/Garza might work.

Delmon Young is the next Manny Ramirez. Trading him makes absolutely no sense.

^^ Delmon Young has an attitude comparable to Albert Belle and reknown disdain for the Rays franchise, it's management, etc.

I don't think Manny Ramirez was stupid enough to throw a bat at an umpire while playing in the minors, now was he?

So does Gomes get a shot at full time duty now or do ya think they'll keep looking to make some deals?

Timmer is an unknown quantity at this point

Who's the starting 2B now for the Rays and where does Zobrist play? Who's the RF?

Kazmir, Shields, and Garza are a pretty good front three.

Does this decrease the likelihood of Elijah Dukes being traded? How's Baldelli's health?

The Times Talked about Riggiano? A prospect in the Rays system, him and Rocco and Jonny would all get time in Right or would at least duke it out in Spring Training.

Jonny needs to get patience back. I loved this guys hustle when he first made it to stay in the majors and yet his second season was crap (with thanks to injury) and his third? He would only play for 2 weeks after each callup and then fall back into his strike out habit.

Remember that Aki Iwamura also plays 2nd base or at least can. If Evan Longoria makes the team (as some expect him to do), he'd play 3rd with Aki moving over to 2nd. Ben Zorbist would be the utility infielder.

Dukes has no trade value, period. If the Rays could ahve gotten rid of him for a pack of Topps trading cards, they would ahve pulled the trigger. Rocco is ... well, tender. He may very well pull his ACL while gettign the mail this off season We'll have to wait and see on that. The early thought is that Rocco, Jonny Gomes and a kid name Riggiano would get time in Right Field or get a chance to vie for the spot. There is still a lot fo time left in this off season as well and you never know iff the Rays will pick up a more formidable and contributign RF or not.

They coudl use a veteran presence in Right or just on the field period. Someone with "Been there" experience

I swear I am not trying to derail this thread, but I have never known what the love affair is with Jonny Gomes.

Yes, I liked his hustle, and his power could be awesome, but note the word 'liked'. His minor league stats were good, not great, see here: Jonny Gomes Statistics (Minor Leagues) - Baseball-Reference.com . You have to discount the year at A+ ball, because those California League stats are always inflated. He did have one year at AAA where his stats project into a good MLer, but still, nothing special.

I think he's a good player, but I don't see him as part of the Rays future. For an outfielder, you need something special, and I just don't think Gomes has proven he's it.
