Lightbulb Shane O'Brien

I think he just debuted for the Lightning last night...or will sometime soon.

Here is a little info on him from a Ducks fan.

I was sad to see him go, but I think he will do well on your team. He is a rookie, but looks very promising. He stepped in well when we lost Pronger and Beauchemin earlier in the season, and then Niedermayer for a few games.

He has grit. He loves to fight. He'll provide sparks when you need them. I wish he was still on the Ducks, but with the D we have it would be a while before he moved up off the 3rd line.

Good luck with him! And thanks for the First-Rounder!!

Sorry you couldn't use that first for Guerin or someone.

That first hurts the farm, but the 3rd coming back will help.

O'Brien made his debut last night, and while he was on the ice for the GWG in OT, he played pretty well.

What I liked most about him is he didn't sit back like a lot of rooks and new guys do. When he had an opportunity to rush it, he did (and well) and when he had the chance to jump into the play, he looked like a kid playing street hockey -- very excited.

He went lumberjack on someone in front of the net - my/our worry is like the other d-first dmen in Tampa, he'll turn into a stickchecker only.

I like what I've seen so far.

He could be a 3/4 guy who flirts with 30 points in the future in TB's offense-from-defense system.

You know, we're talking O'Brien here... but I started wondering about Egener after this deal. Both his status in the organization and how he and O'Brien would play together? I mean, Mike doesn't have the scoring touch but the "drop'em if need be" was his standard in Juniors.

O'Brien seemed to play a nice simple game which was expected for his 1st time playing in our system. He seemed like he likes to play the body, so I hope we can keep him away from Rammer.

He has said that he liked coming to a team that will allow him to jump in and pinch as this is more his type of game.

If he brings a little offense to his play while bringing the grit on the blue line that makes an offensive player shy away from him then he is just what we needed. However everyone has got to remember he is still only 23yoa and a good NHL defenseman does not hit his prime until around the ripe old age of 27.

Well, I hope for your team's sake that he learned a ton from Nieds and Pronger. He does like to pinch in, and he has a decent shot. He'll be a good player and a lot of us were sad to see him go.

As for the 1st Rounder - I have a feeling it will be sent away in a deal before the draft. I'm not too surprised that Burke held onto it at this point - a lot of the deadline prices were too high.

As long as he learns from that mistake, he did look pretty good. And he made a few good moves to keep pucks out of the net as well before OT. Like him getting the puck on-net without blasting it from the point as well.

CT the reason I did not mind giving up the #1 is because this is a weak draft.

Yeah - that's one of the reasons a lot of us were sad to see SOB go!

Heard a rumor that Burke had a deal lined up for Jason Blake but it was too late to be processed before the deadline. That really sucks if true!

Anyway thanks for sharing some Ducks insight. Best of luck with Coleman and the pick, while he wasn't our highest regarded goalie prospect I'm still interested to see what might happen with him in a new location.

As for Egener, I think the fact we acquired O'Brien says a bit about the perceived NHL readiness of our whole crop of D prospects. It just seems they're all showing their warts or hitting rough patches lately, but then look how quickly Ranger overcame similar problems..

Me too.

I was a little surprised to hear Burke wouldn't do the deal without Coleman.

I just don't think he's that good. He's a big goalie and athletic, but not really quick. A decent, solid AHL goalie is his future, IMO. Maybe he can sneak into the NHL in a backup rule. His numbers were phenomenal in London, but that was behind a juggernaut. Little Ryan MacDonald, an undrafted, pint-sized goalie, kept stealing the No.1 job there from Coleman.

Still, best of luck to him.

Anyone shocked he's playing with Boyle? That's a quick assimilation.

That could be Torts' new "binky." They were out there an awful lot. Seeing as Torts had Ranger there, he must want a guy that can skate at a comparable level.

I can't believe (so far) this kid is a rookie. He certainly doesn't play like it.
