Default Pulling the Starter

There were 19 instances this past weekend (5/19-20) in which MLB managers took out their starter during an inning in progress. The relievers didn't do very well.
Batters Faced --- 37
Batters on base --- 17 (6 BB/HB, 7 1B, 3 2B, 1 HR)
Batters retired ---20
Sac flies --- 1
Wild Pitches --- 3
Stolen Bases/Caught stealiong --- 2/1

So the relievers pitched the equivalent of 7 innings, and allowed 17 base runners, two stolen bases and uncorked three wild pitches. Not impressive.

Does anybody have stats based on a larger sample . showing how well replacement relievers do when they replace the starter in the middle of an inning?

Does anybody have any idea why managers are in such a hurry to replace their best pitchers (starters) with their worst (mid relievers)?
