The Angels have signed Gary Matthews Jr. to a 5 year $50 million dollar deal. This years market is ridiculous and Jimmy Edmonds sure is looking like a steal now. Carlos Lee and JD Drew are gonna make a killing this offseason if owners are going to fork out this kind of dough for even marginal talent.
Back to Matthews. Here are his career stats. And here is the Link to the Story. The most games he's ever played in a season was just this past year with 147. Most RBI's, 79 this past year. Most homers, 19 this past year. Highest average, .313 this past year (.263 career average). Career OPS of .755. Lets put it this way. He is basically Juan Encarnacion, only with better defensive skills. When comparing Encarnacion's and Matthews' stats (Juan's stats are HERE), you will find that they are amazingly similar. The only difference is that Encarnacion's salary averages out to $5 million per year while Matthews is exactly double that. Amazing! Who knew that Juan was such a deal! |
