A taped Jeff Weaver interview was played today on Channel 5 Sports in St. Louis and he said that he is looking for stability. The length of the contract is important to him just as much for knowing he can unpack his bags and be a part of one team for a few years as it is for the money. After the interview was played, the sportscaster said that he felt 3 years at $6MM per year would do it. Last word I have is that they have offered 2 years with a team option for a 3rd year.

Weaver would be a good addition, you can't have too many starters! I think the pitching will be looking good if we get him. $6 million a year isn't bad either when you compare it to the $10 million per they were throwing out as a possibility earlier in the offseason.

Two years with an option year tagged on -- I wouldn't want to be
on the hook for 3 full years with Weaver. It's probably an option year that is being negotiated. My guess is the Cards would have to give up more than $6m/year that the on-air personality suggested to sign him to a 2-yr contract. Maybe 2 yrs. $16.5 guarenteed. $6.5m in 2007 $8.5m in 2008 option for $10m in 2009 with $1.5m buyout. The guarentee would be his salaries for '07 + '08 + the buyout. $16.5m is more than I would want to guarentee Weaver, but -- at a minimum -- that's what it's going to take, imo. I find some of the posts I've read amazing. The same people that were willing to pay another team to take Weaver before the post season are wanting the Cards to pay 10M a year for him. I've been in favor of keeping him from the get-go but the market has been ridiculous this off season. AR. You're the closest but since the big boys are gone and the interest in Weaver has been limited, I could see a deal for 6M in '07, 7M in 08 and an option for 8M in 09 with a 1M buyout.

My guess is that you are most likely correct in your figures Ar. That seems like a contract Weaver is likely to get.
Remember, Weaver has some pretty wicked stuff when he's on. You never know what Dunc could do for him given a full season.... |

BleacherBum --
What incentives would you add to Weaver's contract? 415 ip over 2 years and the 3rd yr. is picked up? something like that? ewt -- I'm stunned by the contracts this year too. would your deal for Weaver include incentives, like BleacherBum suggests? Wonder where the "middle ground" is in the negotiations or whether the Cards have drawn a line in the sand and will go no farther? Last edited by ArRedbird; 01-19-2007 at 12:41 PM. |

I would probably include something like IP - break it down over several levels for him - say X$$ for 150 IP, bump it up $$$ wise for 160, 175, 200, etc. for each year.
In a way, Weaver is similar to Marquis. You never know what your going to get out of him based on his past pitching performances. He has a high ceiling, as we saw this past playoff season. But, he can go in the complete opposite direction as the Angels found out. |

I couldn't find a link to the interview at 5, but I did find an interview that Jeff did yesterday for KFNS 590
. Scroll down the page and you'll see the link to the audio interview. The main thing that I took away from it is that Jeff is not worried too much about the $$$, but is more concerned with feeling comfortable with a team. Dave Duncan and TLR could be big selling points for him. He also said that he would like a long term deal (wants to be in one spot for awhile). And he would like to be in the NL (finds it more fun). Looks like the high offer so far might be 4 year / $10 mil/per. Wants to get a deal done shortly, so that he can have it behind him as he starts preparing for ST. Said that he and his agent waited too long last year to finalize the deal (with the Angels). There is also a nice interview with Mark Lamping at the same site.
