Default 2006 Press Release - New Springfield (AA) Manager (Old News)

"Pop" Warner Takes Over for 2007

The Springfield Cardinals introduced their second manager in team history on Monday afternoon at Hammons Field.

Ron “Pop” Warner will take over as manager for the 2007 season, replacing Chris Maloney, who guided the Cards in their first two season of Texas League action.

Warner, 36, joins Springfield from the Cardinals’ High Class A affiliate in Palm Beach, where he has managed the last two seasons, going 144-131. In 2005, Warner led Palm Beach to the Florida State League title in a five-game series win over Lakeland. That club featured several former Springfield players, including Reid Gorecki, Mike Parisi, Jarrett Hoffpauir and Mark Worrell. Palm Beach again went to the playoffs under Warner in 2006, but was ousted in the first round by St. Lucie.

Warner’s background includes 16 years in the Cardinals’ system, playing in the Minor Leagues from 1991 until 1999. Originally drafted in the 1991 June Free Agent Draft in the 17th round, Warner made it as far as Triple-A Memphis, before becoming a coach in 2000.

“We’re excited to welcome Pop to the Cardinals’ family here in Springfield,” said Vice President – General Manager Matt Gifford. “I think with all his experience with guys coming up from Palm Beach, he’s going to be a great fit.”

Former manager Chris Maloney, who had a two-year record of 136-142 with Springfield, was introduced as the Memphis Redbirds Manager at a press conference earlier today. “The goal of any player or manager is to move up,” said Gifford. “We’re proud to have had Chris Maloney here for our first two seasons and want to thank him and wish him good luck in Triple-A. He certainly deserves this opportunity.”

“Pop” Warner and the Springfield Cardinals open the 2007 season on the road in Midland and then return to Springfield for their home opener at Hammons Field on Thursday, April 12th. Bleacher --
You might check the date on that article.
2008 will be Pop Warner's second season at AA, I think.

ArRedbird - I posted this in Nov 2006. The new guy is the one who brought it forward with his first post.

Welcome to the new member.

I like those 2 managers who were promoted last year and I think they did good. Hoping for even better in 2008.
I hope we have winning players at Memphis for a change.
