RockintheRed is on a distinguished road
Default Quick hits: Harris, Izzy, Wellemeyer, Rasmus

The Post-Dispatch reports that Mitch Harris, our 13th round draft pick this year, has been ordered to report to the Navy and will not be allowed to play pro ball with the Cardinals. Harris is a very intriguing pitcher who posted an 11.78 K/9 throughout his college career with Navy. The Navy doesn't seem to care whether Harris is the second coming of Nolan Ryan or not:
"Bottom line is, we're a nation at war and as a nation at war we believe it is inappropriate for Navy and Marine Corps personnel to be released from service obligation to play sports at a time other sailors and Marines are carrying out their service obligations," Davis said.
Unfortunately, that's probably a fair decision to make. Harris knew what he was getting into when he joined the Navy, which is a huge commitment in itself, and that makes him responsible for fulfilling his duties as a Naval Academy graduate. If you don't like it, don't sign up. We have George Bush to thank for being a "nation at war," but that's another discussion for another blog. Good luck, Mitch.

The PD also reports that Jason Isringhausen will be activated next week, saying that Izzy will pitch in a "variety of situations." Mark Worrell didn't help his cause by giving up two earned runs last night, as I would imagine he is the first one to get the demotion when Izzy is ready. Right now we have Isringhausen, Clement, Wainwright, and Mulder getting close to being activated. That leaves a lot of options and not a whole lot of room. The end of this month will force some decisions to be made.

Todd Wellemeyer will make his start tonight, and he is probably the hottest player on the Cards right now. In his last 7 starts, Todd has a 1.88 ERA and is 5-0, allowing only 33 hits in 43 innings. Overall, Wellemeyer is 7-1 with a 2.93 ERA and a 6.98 K/9. At home, Todd is 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA. If he's not getting consideration for the All-Star game, he should be.

Don't look now, but Colby Rasmus has had 3 multi-hit games in a row. Seeing Jay Bruce and the amount of success he's having with the Reds has me salivating for our own super-prospect to make his way to the big show.
