That was one crazy game yesterday - almost too crazy to merit any discussion. By the time Albert was put at second base, I really wanted the game to end... win or lose.
The Cesar Izturis saga took another interesting turn with the injury inflicted by Gagne's wild pitch. All signs point to a demotion of Brad Thompson and the return of Brendan Ryan (Shoulder-licker, Flyin' Ryan, Savior, whatever you want to call him). As unfair as that may seem to Brad Thompson, the benefit of having an option has forced the demotion. He had a bad outing in what amounted to be a fluky game, and his fellow option-able counterparts - Kyle McClellan and Anthony Reyes - have really turned it on lately. Viva El Birdos threw the trade possibility of Brad Thompson+ for Brent Lillibridge of the Braves, a 24-year-old shortstop in Triple-A. I'm not sold on the idea that Brent could be any more of an upgrade than Ryan at the present time, although Brent's poor .152/.208/.227 line is also the victim of a .196 BABIP. There's still time in the young season to stake out other team's needs and capitalize on them. Jed Lowrie, Sean Rodriguez, Ben Zobrist, and others still remain viable options. In the upcoming days I will try to compile a list of all the possible options out there at shortstop. Ian Snell faces us tonight. Should be a good match-up against Wellemeyer. More... |
