The Saguaros will be managed by Springfield Cardinals' manager Pop Warner.

8/27/08 - St Louis - Purchased the contract of 1B Josh Phelps from Memphis and added him to the 25-man & 40-man rosters. Moved LHP Mark Mulder from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Optioned LHP Jaime Garcia to Memphis.

8/28/08 - Palm Beach - P Francisco Samuel & INF/C Tony Cruz were selected for the Dominican Winter League by the Estrellas Orientales. Samuel has been closing for Palm Beach. Cruz has not played since mid July (DL'd 7/28).

9/02/08 - St Louis - Scout.com is reporting that P Jason Motte will play for Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League for the 2008-09 winter season.

9/02/08 - St Louis - Cards moved P Jason Isringhausen and OF Chris Duncan from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL. They also announced that Rico Washington was outrighted (Memphis?).

9/03/08 - St Louis - Cards announced that OF Joe Mather will undergo season-ending surgery Thursday for removal of a bone from his left hand. An examination found a crack in a wedge-shaped bone located near the base of Mather's left ring finger and pinkie. Surgery to remove the bone is considered routine and includes a 6-week rehab. Cards also announced that P Jamie Garcia might be undergoing Tommy John surgery.

9/6/08 - St Louis - OF Joe Mather had successful surgery on 9/4 to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his left hand.

9/6/08 - St Louis - P Jason Isringhausen and P Jaime Garcia have scheduled surgeries: Garcia on 9/8 and Izzy on 9/12.

9/6/08 - Palm Beach - Closer Francisco Samuel was sidelined by a pulled groin muscle (date unknown) and was forced to miss his team's 3-game FSL playoffs, which ended Friday night.

9/11/08 - St Louis - The Memphis Redbirds and the St. Louis Cardinals have signed a 4-year Player Development Contract. As part of the agreement, the Cards will play 2 exhibition games next spring against the Redbirds at AutoZone Park on April 3 & 4. In addition, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that the Cardinals are open to discussing at a later date the idea of buying the Memphis franchise.

9/12/08 - St Louis - Jason Isringhausen underwent surgery on his right elbow. Jaime Garcia's Tommy John surgery was performed on Monday, 9/8.

9/18/08 - St Louis - OF Rick Ankiel underwent surgery in Philadelphia on Wednesday to repair a sports hernia. The recovery time is expected to be approximately four to six weeks.

9/19/08 - St Louis - P Chris Carpenter underwent an MRI to check out the persistent weakness and nerve irritation near his pitching shoulder.

9/20/08 - St Louis - The Cardinals have scheduled an examination of Randy Flores' sore left shoulder for Monday.

9/22/08 - St Louis - Right-hander Kyle McClellan has been named the Cardinals' Rookie of the Year.

9/25/08 - St Louis - 33 year-old P Randy Flores had arthroscopic surgery today on his left shoulder. Flores is the 11th Cardinal unable to finish the season.

9/27/08 - St Louis - 21 year-old OF Daryl Jones has been named the Cardinals' minor league player of the year. Between Palm Beach and Springfield, Jones hit .316/.407/.483. He hit 13 home runs and had 24 stolen bases in 30 attempts.

9/27/08 - St Louis - 22 year-old right-handed starting pitcher Jess Todd has been named the Cardinals' minor league pitcher of the year. Todd advanced through three levels during the season, ending with AAA Memphis. Overall, he posted 8 wins, 6 losses with a 2.88 ERA in 153 innings. Todd has been invited to Spring Training for '09.

10/15/08 - St Louis - The Cardinals claimed LH reliever Charlie Manning off waivers from the Washington Nats and added him to the 40-man roster. To make room, the Cardinals designated 1B Josh Phelps for assignment.

10/20/08 - St Louis - The Cardinals have sent a letter to the agent of LHP Mark Mulder informing him that the organization will not exercise the $11m option on Mulder's 2009 contract. The Cardinals will pay the $1.5m buyout option, and Mulder will become a free agent after the World Series.

11/21/08 - St Louis - The Cardinals have signed 28 y-o C Justin Knoedler to 1-year minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training. He played for Sacramento (AAA-Oakland) last season where he hit .175 in 217 ABs. It is unclear whether the Cards are signing him as a catcher or a pitcher. In the minors Knoedler logged 31.2 innings as a pitcher with a 1.15 ERA.
