Default Rule V draft today

MLB held its annual Rule V draft today on the last day of the winter meetings.

Cards did not lose anyone today in the three phases of the draft. Cards only picked up one player today - in the AAA portion of the draft - a SS in the Washington organization. Jose Contreras, 21 y/o as of this past April.

Contreras -- Back up ss at Palm Beach, perhaps?

Looks like we also picked up Omar Falcon, c, from the Giants' org.

Baseball America has Falcon (24 yo) listed out of the Giants.
Wrong.
Both MiLB and the Cube have him playing for the Mariners.
He was picked up by them in last year's Rule V out of San Diego.

MiLB lists him as a switch-hitter; the Cube, as hitting from the right only.

Career highs in '06 for games (58), hits (46),
doubles (13), and homers (7).

Looks like he played roughly 1/3 of the games -- so
he'll be a backup catcher, most likely, for Quad Cities or PB.

a nice season: .264/.396/.460/.856

And Falcon throws you another curve. MLB article has him coming to St Louis via the Pirates.

He's racking up some frequent flyer miles today.

According to Kary Booher of the Springfield News-Leader, Falcon is seen as the potential C at Springfield in 2007, if Bryan Anderson can't make the jump to AA ball.
