This was one start.
Maybe Duncan is not leading Anthony astray. Maybe Anthony is just screwed up. I think he has good stuff. I would love for him to make it as a regular starter (for us). Maybe it would be for another team. |

Not a good day for the Cards....although at least 3 of our hitters have 2 hits a piece thus far including Juan G. with a 2B and Rasmus w/ a solo HR in the 5th....sure would like to see him force LaRussa to keep him w/ the Big Club....looks like at least 2 of the three hurlers today will be sent out soon....we will win or lose with our pitching....as always.

I'm surprised Juan Gonzalez is on the team. I was wondering about him a few weeks ago, thinking that he's still old enough to be playing despite being three years removed from the major leagues. His last decent season was five years ago. He's lethal if he's healthy. Today points in a good direction.
Here's a good read on him: Ex-Tiger Juan Gonzalez’s mission is pretty simple: Baseball's miracle | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press |

There was another article earlier in the spring that talked with Eduardo Perez, Jose Oquendo and Albert Pujols about Juan. Juan has been working out at a camp that the former Cardinal Perez was running down in the islands. Perez liked what he saw and brought it with Jose and Albert when they stopped by to see him this winter.
Eduardo thought and said that the years off had actually helped Juan. It allowed his body to fully heal and now he was once again able to go "full steam ahead". It remains to be seen if the years off were actually a help or a hinderance. If he's healthy and can still swing the bat, he'll make this ball club. It's very possible he could end up platooning with Chris Duncan in LF and being a strong RH bat off the bench. Something Tony LaRussa loves to have. And if he doesn't hit, he's already made it be known that he'll accept an assignment to Memphis (AAA). John Mabry went this route a few years ago. Mabry hit well and was back up with the big club within a couple of months.

He was such a phenomenal player that the time off couldn't have hurt that much. He's missed so much time in his career. The real problem, however, is his age. He'll be 39 this year. He has been playing baseball elsewhere, but has been limited by injuries since his last MLB appearance.
