Default Bonds...Barry Bonds

I think Hell is starting to freeze over.

Quote:
Bonds' name surfaced in a meeting that Borris had with the Cardinals, according to a major-league source, but while the team has a need in left field, it is more focused on pitching.

The Cardinals apparently were intrigued on some level by the idea of adding Bonds, the source said, but would only sign him if he played for a very low salary.

Ignoring the fact that its probably not going to happen.....

Imagine the lineup with Bonds in it. Pujols would have an amazing year with Bonds hitting behind him.

Having said that. I hate Bonds just as much as anyone else.

Default I feel like passing a pig.......

Bonds and Pujols would make an interesting pair in the lineup.

I find it interesting the adverse reaction to having Bonds on our team as to having McGwire back in the day. Now I don't want to start a steroid discussion here, as neither player has officially been implicated for using them. Does it boil down to attitude? Granted McGwire was a puppy dog next to Bonds.

If Bonds gets us back to the World Series, would it be worth all the hassle?

Yes. But right now our concern should be starting pitching first, then outfield.

Bonds would actually be perfect because we know he wouldn't play every game meaning that on days he rests we could start Duncan to get him more experience in the outfield.

Intrigued? So am I. To see if he'll sign for one year for the league minimum. Otherwise, I'm not interested in the slightest.

You guys have to respect Bonds at the same rate that I have to respect Pujols (at least, as the players that they are). You can't say that steroids made him the player he's been 2002 - 2004, because his '93 season was just as good less the amount of strikeouts. As a matter of fact, you can't even say that he took all of the steroids that he's been said to have taken as a verifiable fact... but that's up for a different discussion.

Bonds would make any team better, just by looking at the stats of a team's record when he's in the lineup vs. when he's not. So, he would be a great addition to the Cardinals, as well as any other team. Unfortunately, like most fans would probably hope, it's best for him to stay in San Francisco.

FWIW-

Quote:
Free agent left fielder Barry Bonds created a stir at the meetings when he walked into the hotel lobby Wednesday morning. Bonds turned aside questions before meeting with several teams, including the Giants. Jocketty denied a report that the Cardinals planned to meet with him as a possible fit for "the best hitter available." Other club sources underscored the franchise's lack of interest in the 42-year-old slugger, who is closing on Hank Aaron's all-time home run record.

I agree that he would be best off just staying in San Fran.

Quote:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Barry Bonds' appearance at Major League Baseball's winter meetings Wednesday caused quite a stir as speculation swirled about where he might land in 2007 to resume his chase of Hank Aaron's home run record.

The world champs, by chance?

According to a story on the San Jose Mercury News' Web site, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa approached Bonds' agent on Wednesday night and requested a meeting with the currently unemployed outfielder and owner of 734 career home runs.

"I want to talk to your guy," La Russa reportedly told Jeff Borris outside a steakhouse at the Walt Disney World resort where the meetings are being held. "Where is he? I want to talk to him."
Quote:
St. Louis general manager Walt Jocketty, asked whether he met with Bonds, shook his head, the Mercury News said. "We're trying to get our pitching in order first," was Jocketty's response.

St. Louis, then, could be the answer to the question "Which is the mystery club suddenly in the mix to sign Bonds?"

According to the newspaper, La Russa made his request with Borris in the presence of a Mercury News reporter, then the two men spoke privately for several minutes. Borris was described as "shaken" upon being asked whether Bonds had met with Cardinals officials earlier Wednesday.

"I won't confirm or deny that," Borris told the Mercury News.
Quote:
It's believed Bonds has shown no inclination to take a cut from his 2006 salary ($18 million), hasn't been especially open to tying his earnings to health or playing time, and wants a vesting option that could turn a potential deal into a two-year contract potentially worth in the neighborhood of $40 million.
The Giants, on the other hand, are believed to want to guarantee about half of what Bonds made this season, with incentives based on plate appearances that could bring him close to, or slightly below, this year's salary.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2689475

Clearly we aren't going to sign Barry for that much. But if the only teams interested in him are us and the Giants, and the Giants are only willing to guarantee half of what he made this season (plus incentives) then we would have a shot.

Right now i'm more concerned about our pitching, but I have to admit that I would like seeing that name in the lineup behind Pujols. The offense would be beautiful.

I'm not holding my breath though....

Could this just be Boras talking it up to try and get the Giants to up their bid? I mean to even think about signing Bonds for the kind of money that he is wanting seems just so un-Jocketty like.

We're not going to sign Bonds....We need to, as WJ stated above( and Kods has acknowledged), to concentrate on pitching....

I'd rather Bonds retire, but I admit if he was to sign anywhere I'd be intrigued by the Bonds-Puljos combination! That would just be fun to watch.

It might be nice to watch the offensive fireworks, but if you thought Duncan was a disaster waiting to happen in the OF, put Bonds out in LF.

Did you happen to see how terrible Bonds "D" was last year? If the ball wasn't hit directly to him, forget about it.

Cochise - I think your getting the agents mixed up. Bonds is represented by Jeff Boris. The agent everyone loves to hate is Steve Boras.
