Default Schmidt POSSIBLY signs with Dodgers - Deal NOT official

Quote:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Cardinals consider themselves serious players for free-agent right-hander Jason Schmidt. Randy Hendricks, one of Schmidt's agents, sees it the same way.
Quote:
The Cardinals have targeted Schmidt, a 33-year-old who spent the past 5 1/2 seasons as a member of the Giants, and they are optimistic about their chances. Schmidt is also reportedly being courted by the Dodgers, Cubs and Mariners, and possibly other clubs as well.
Cardinals make push for Schmidt

Cardinals fans, what do you think the chances are of your team signing Jason Schmidt?

That is a nice article. A starter like Schmidt at the start of the season would really make us feel better. We have been disappointed in the pursuit of some other starters like him. Some of them who went to other teams for money sure wound up helping us because they did. They blew their arm or lost their pitching skill in other ways.

I like the way Walt does. He has to work in a tighter budget than some GM's. Maybe now some of those guys like in that article will want to be on a winner. Walt gets us some good ones. If Schmidt just wants to go for the money in hand, or the west coast, we're out of it.

Landing Jason would make the Cardinals one happy and even more scary team.

Schmidt isn't done with his career. He may have lost his 97 MPH fastball (at least last year) since that injury, but if he can still learn to use his command and as long as his catchers know how to take care of his changeup, I really can't say that he'd ever not be worth less than $12 mil/year.

He should probably stay in the NL (wherever he may land); it's best that he doesn't have to take the time to re-learn a new array of hitters.

Is Walt listening to me for once? We'll see. I think it all depends on where Schmidt wants to go at this point. If he's going for the money (or the years in the contract) then we probably don't have a shot. But if he's willing to take just a little less then I think we've got a pretty good shot. We'll see.

I'd be shocked if Schmidt took a deal that cheaply. Primarily because of all the mediocre pitchers that are getting 10-11 million per year, and Schmidt is NOT mediocre.

Schmidt is probably the second best pitcher on the free agent market this year (next to Zito). If Walt gets him for that low of an amount then I will agree to name my first born after him (with the middle name being tulcard )

Kods....what an Honor. I'm still smilin'....(where are the smilies?). "When we do get him I'll name my next Laborador after him....WJ....quite a name for a female.

Personally, I think we'll sign Schmidt. I know we've gone after high profile players in the past and fallen short, but this time I, for some reason, feel Schmidt actually wants the opportunity to "WIN"....even if he has to settle for a "paltry" 10 or 11 million per year....(Just my good 'ole HO once again Ewt....)

Yeah! I'll nickname him Bleacherbum to boot

Now Tully....don't let it go to your head!

I really hope we do sign him, but considering the Cardinals history with signing, or should I say trying to sign, big name pitchers.... (well that isn't a bad thing. A lot of the pitchers we've been after in the past have just flat out stunk with their new teams. I think Schmidt won't have that problem though). We'll see. I know that 10-11 million is a lot but a lot of baseball players like to soak up every last million...just look at JD Drew of all people. Hopefully he's not all about the money and wants to join a team with a winning tradition. Those darn cubbies will no doubt to everything in their power to get him and if not then to raise his costing price which wouldn't bode well for us.

Go get him Walt so my kid can get beat up on the playground!

Default WJ

We may end up with Schmidt.
But when was the last time we heard about
a WJ deal before it was finalized? (rarely)

Our GM usually plays his cards (ahem) close to the vest.
He may say "we have targeted" so-and-so, but so have
a lot of other teams. He usually makes a business
decision: "we'll you offer x years for $xx. We'd like to have you."

But typically,he doesn't get into an
agent-generated, negotiation frenzy
that drives up and up the "value" of a pitcher.

So -- l'll wait and to see what Walt comes up with.
Schmidt would be nice, yeah.

But let's wait and see.

I'm shocked! We miss out on another big name pitcher

As you can see, that junk offer of 10-11 million per was nowhere near what it needed to be. Especially for a player that would rather be on the west coast.

Better sign Suppan now Walt.

Guess it was all about the money after all. $15.667/ year for 3 years.

Glad we could help drive the price up for the Jason and his agent. They should make sure that Walter gets a Xmas fruit cake this year.

If we don't get Suppan then I think i'll jump on the "trade for Buehrle" bandwagon. As much as I hate to give up talent for a guy who will be coming here the next year anyway.... This club needs a solid number 2 and Kip Wells is not it.

So to put this in perspective; He gets nearly one-third of the annual budget of the Royals?! I like Schmidt, but at this price I'm glad we didn't get him.
