Kodiak,
I still would rather trade for Buehrle and sign him to an extension (trade is contingent upon us being able to talk to him about the extension first) than risk him seeing dollar signs next year.
I'm not as sure Buehrle is coming here. I think we have a good chance and we will likely get a hometown discount, but I'm not sure 10% or 15% off guarantees he'll play here.

From Bernie on Schmidt.

Quote:
offered 3 and 39... probably would have gone to 3 and 42....nothing higher than that...

will likely revisit Suppan....and Mulder.... still not sure about Weaver.

That is a pretty fair offer! So I guess it was all about the money

Disappointing, but Schmidt doesn't deserve more than Carp anyway....we'd better be able to re-sign Weaver and make an attempt for Suppan (who I highly doubt will be back)....

Ar. you are correct about WJ not making public his conversations with others. He probably had to make a statement as was undoubtedly pressed by the ever hounding media....didn't matter anyway as Schmidt stayed on the West Coast and chased the money as well....

Default Jennings

Looks like I posted my misgivings about the Schmidt
signing just before the news hit the wires. I'm sorry
we missed out on him -- but not at the $m's & years it
would have taken.

If Batista, Soup, and Weaver don't sign with the Cards, then
my preference is to acquire someone by trade.

Perhaps a solid, innings-eater like Jennings,
but only if he can be signed to an extention,
say, for example, 2 yrs, $12-13m.

Tully-

Check your PM (private messages).

AR-

I wouldn't mind Jennings.

I'm sure Walt has something up his sleeve.

The media may have jumped the gun....

Dodgers trying to sign Schmidt

By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer
December 6, 2006

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers were trying to sign free agent starter Jason Schmidt on Wednesday, a deal that would give the club an ace right-hander in their rotation.

Schmidt's agents, Alan and Randy Hendricks, were still meeting with several teams on the 33-year-old right-hander.

"We do not have a deal," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said.

The St. Louis Cardinals were also courting Schmidt, who went 11-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 32 starts during 2006 for the Giants.
It appears that this article was posted within the past hour so I guess the deal really isn't official. We'll see. I doubt the Cards can get him unless they sweeten the deal with more money, or another year. My guess is that he'll officially be a Dodger in due time.

And this is from Bernie...

Quote:
Talked to one of the Cardinals' higher-ups just now...

DeWitt and Jocketty have been told that there's no deal yet -- and that they (Schmidt and his agents) would like to still have discussions.... so as far as the Cardinals are concerned, there's still reason to have discussion with Schmidt's agents... and I am told the Cardinals are making a "strong" offer.

True, but if Schmidt doesn't wind up in LA, I'd be shocked.

Are they trying to drive up the price? Wonder if there is interest in STL.?

Aren't these the agents for Looer as well?

ESPN and PTI were reporting tonight it was a done deal. In any event, if those are the numbers being kicked around, we should be out of the bidding pronto.

Still not a done deal....

Quote:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. — Despite numerous reports free agent righthander Jason Schmidt had agreed to accept a three-year, $47 million offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cardinals believed Wednesday night that they remained a player for their No. 1 pitching target after modifying their bid earlier in the day.

"It's our understanding that he hasn't signed," general manager Walt Jocketty insisted shortly after meeting with Schmidt's agents, Alan and Randy Hendricks.
Quote:
Jocketty expected a resolution within the next 24 to 48 hours, a prediction that is likely to come true before the Cardinals' traveling party leaves the winter meetings around noon today.
Quote:
Jocketty said Monday that the Cardinals would not offer any pitcher a contract with a higher average annual value than the $44.5 million extension given Carpenter.

Some interpreted Jocketty's pronouncement as meaning that the club would not exceed the average annual value of the $63.5 million owed Carpenter over the next five seasons. However, the Cardinals defined extension as "new money" — $14 million in 2009; $14.5 million in 2010; $15 million in 2011; and a $1 million buyout. There are $3 million worth of appearance incentives that became guaranteed within the new deal.

Although I would love to have Schmidt I refuse to get my hopes up....obviously he wants to stay on the West Coast.

Now....prove me wrong Jason!
