Cardinals pitcher Todd Wellemeyer
signed a 1 yr deal, for estimated $1M for '08. He's expected to compete for the no. 5 starter position. If he could avg. 6 innings/outing, w/ a 5.00 ERA he'd be a pretty good no. 5. (I can wish, can't I?) But that's a lot to ask of the former reliever, imo. |

If he averages 6 innings a start with a 5.00 ERA, he'll be a full half run worse than the league average last year and lose in the neighborhood of 15+ games. Much better to put him in the pen where he can't do as much damage. With TLR spot starting and matchups, he could be a fair placeholder. At least he's cheap.

They're team averages compared to last year in the league, which is the best I've got. If you have access to ERA's for #5 starters in the NL, I'd be happy to look at it. League average last year was 4.43.
2007 National League (NL) Statistics and Awards - Baseball-Reference.com Needless to say, I'm fairly comfortable in observing that no team who picked up a pitcher 15% or so worse than average should count themselves as 'improved' in that regard. My opinion only, of course.

Then we should hope that he gets 22 starts this year...that should guarantee 18 wins. Do I sense a Cy Young?
