I'm surprised that Scott Boras allowed him to sign for that amount. I figured they would ask for $3-4 mil, especially after Boras projected Rick's #'s into a 30 HR/ 100 RBI season.

$900k + incentives based on number of ABs
This is a good signing, imo. Does anyone recall what Ankiel's salary was last year? My (admitted faulty) memory says it was $450,000, even tho it was a minor league contract. I'm probably wrong. But if that's true, then you could say Ankiel gets a 100% raise for '08. And that's a good deal for him, and a $900k contract is a good deal for the Cards. just my .02 |

The reason that Ankiel got the low amount is because he has ZERO comparables to run in his arbitration hearings, so nearly what ever Boras asked for the arbitrator would have ruled in favor of the team.

I'm anxious to see what he does.
His first turn in Memphis, before he turned 20 years old, I said he was the best player I ever saw that young. He was a pitcher, but I meant fielding and batting, too. I was worried that they called him up to soon. He pitched so good and I was happy. Then came the meltdown on Tony's playoff shenanigans. Tony knows, he owes Rick. I am a fan. I hope he does so great. He likely will strikeout a lot. Still, I love this signing. I think Rick wants to be in St. Louis. |
