Default Winter WarmUp

The Cards are holding their annual Winter WarmUp this weekend (Sat-Mon).

I'll be going down to attend the minor league session given by Jeff Luhnow and his staff on Saturday.

As I have done in the past, I'll try to get your questions answered. SO, post any questions that you may have here on this thread. The session is on Saturday, so I'll take questions up to about 7 AM Saturday.

You won't get these answers:
Will Tony give the young guys a chance to win a starting spot in the lineup?

Is there a chance that Anthony Reyes will make it, or is he gone.
I think Dyar Miller is the only one who gave him a chance.
I like Dave Duncan. His formula is great for a lot of pitchers.
It does not work for every pitcher. Other organizations have some pitchers who succeed doing it different ways. They should let Reyes go, if they won't let him try to pitch. He is a change up pitcher and we will not see it with Duncan.

I echo Coops' question re: Reyes.....what happened to such a promising young pitcher?

Also:

Is Albert considered adequately protected with the lineup as it might be shaping up to look like? What if Glaus isn't ready/has steroid-legal trouble/etc.?

What does Kozma's trajectory look like?

Are we really confident in Ankiel's ability to maintain solid OF #'s?

Thanks, BleacherBum, for going to the Winter Warmup.
Will Cranny make it this year? What execs are going
to show up to answer questions? Any scouts, perhaps?

I'd like to hear about the development
of 3 position players and 4 pitchers:

Joe Mather -- what are his defensive tools like? does he have a Major League bat?

Nick Stavinoha -- what do they make of his off-year last year? Was he moved up too soon? nagging injuries? what are his defensive tools like? does he have a Major League bat?

Tyler Greene -- what's the progress on his injury? where will he start the year?

Stu Pomerantz -- what are they expecting from him this year?

Mitchell Boggs -- is he ready for AAA? what qualities do they like in him?

Blake Hawksworth -- I noticed he didn't make Sickel's top 20 or his "others included" list. What are the qualities they like in him? What's his out pitch?

Dennis Dove -- what's the progress on his injury? where will he start the year?

I'll leave the more obvious players for others They will likely receive the most time on Saturday. (Rasmus, Garcia, Ottovino, Mortensen, Anderson, Motte, Perez, Barton, Worrell)

AR - Cranny says he will join me on Saturday for the minor league session. They did not list any execs in the minor league dept other than Jeff Luhnow. I imagine John Vuch will be one of his presenters. But, I haven't confirm that.

Didn't Vuch join us for a chat last spring?

John Vuch was one of several who joined us last winter. Here's a Link to a list of those who chatted here last season.

Derrick Goold was at the WWup today and has posted a nice Q&A session that he had with Joe Mather & Chris Perez - Link to Bird Land Blog

Derrick also has a general entry in his blog about the WWup - Link

Some good stuff in it about Johann Santana, Troy Glaus & Miguel Batista.

Skip Schumaker gets a chance by David Wilhelm / Belleville News-Democrat

Quote:
While Schumaker is certain to make the Opening Day roster --especially with the departures of Jim Edmonds and So Taguchi and the potentially career-ending eye injury to Juan Encarnacion --his game plan remains the same.

"Every spring training, I go out and try to win a job," Schumaker said Sunday at the Cardinals' Winter Warm-Up. "It's no different this spring from last spring. Maybe there's a few less outfielders this time. Usually, there's eight good ones and it's a battle. I think I'm going in the same way, just trying to win a spot

Notes: Kinney begins throwing program - Elbow injuries sidelined right-handed reliever for 2007 season By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

Quote:
Reliever Josh Kinney, who sustained a broken bone in his elbow while rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery, has begun a throwing program again. Kinney hopes to be able to pitch in Spring Training games by mid-March, he said on Sunday.

"It's 100 percent healed up," Kinney told reporters at the Cardinals' annual Winter Warm-Up. "It was a broken bone. It feels great. Right now I'm in the middle of a throwing program. I'm long-tossing 150 feet every other day. Next week I'll bump it up to 180 feet. I'm scheduled to get off a mound come February."
Quote:
(Brian) Barton, a Rule 5 Draft selection from the Cleveland organization, also gave reporters an update on his right knee, which he had surgically repaired early in the offseason.

"I would say I'm somewhere in the 90s [percent range]," he said. "I'm running again. I'm continuing rehab and therapy. It feels good. I'm just ready to go out there and test it out and hopefully it can respond well.

"I've been sprinting for the past month now. Everything feels good. It was just a minor surgery. I'm ready to go."

That's good news on Barton. He could be the sleeper that we're looking for. If his knee is 100%, he'll be our leadoff hitter and CFer until Rasmus is ready.

If healthy and clean, Glaus would be an excellent #4-5 hitter. At #4? Well, he's definately the classic NL guy in that role. We'll see.

Gonna be an interesting year, huh? It's crazy, but even with the loss of Edmonds and Rolen, I'm kind of excited about what the offense might do this year. Other than Izturis I suppose.

The pitching is what's gonna be a surprise one way or the other.
