This probably had to be done before they brought in a high-priced starter. If you include the option for 2012, it's a 5 year deal. It shows Carp the respect that he deserves. No financial details were given.

Carp signed an extension that will keep him here through 2011, with a club option for 2012.

NP, StlKat. The deal can actually be worth 77M if the extension is picked up. When you see some of the ridiculous numbers for mediocre pitchers, Carp did the right thing again. It's great to know that he will anchor the staff for the next 5 years.

A no-brainer.
Having said that, I'm not a fan of deals this long for pitchers, and would have preferred a 3 year agreement.

I hate more than 3 years for a pitcher, and am not fond of dollar figures that high. That said, Carpenter has been class from the beginning, and this deal is not only designed to keep the best pitcher in the NL on the best team, but to reward him for the bargain price he's given us these past years. If Walt was ever going to pay a premium price for a premium player, this was the one to do it for. Congrats, Chris, Walt and all of Cardinal Nation.
