Ummm...How many african americans do the Cardinals and Indians have on their teams combined (even their 40-man rosters)? My guess is that it is a pretty small number. I think it is kind of silly to have a baseball game played in honor of the civil rights movement when the percentage of african americans playing the game is probably near an all-time low (post segregation of course).
I think baseball should be more concerned with getting more kids to play the game as opposed to football and basketball. This move doesn't seem like it is a very helpful one if their goal is to attract more of the inner city youth. But what do I know.... |

For those who are interested in going, tickets go on sale tomorrow at $50/ticket. Here's the email that I received from the Cards on the sale of the tickets:
================================================== ============= ST. LOUIS CARDINALS TICKET NEWS December 4, 2006 ================================================== ============= FIRST CIVIL RIGHTS GAME SET FOR MARCH 31 Major League Baseball will stage its inaugural "Civil Rights Game" this coming March 31, when the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals play the Cleveland Indians in an exhibition game at AutoZone Park in Memphis, the home of the National Civil Rights Museum and the city where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The 5:30 p.m. CT game, which will annually precede the opening of the regular season, will be broadcast live on ESPN, and is planned to culminate a day during which baseball will celebrate the nation's Civil Rights Movement. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, December 5 at 9am CT. Tickets are priced at $50.00 per ticket. As part of the event, MLB will be making donations to several charities, including the National Civil Rights Museum, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Jackie Robinson Foundation, the Negro League Museum and other local Memphis charities. Buy your tickets to be a part of this inaugural event. << BUY TICKETS >> http://click.mlb.com/ct/click?q=44-9...jmu7vEMmKac3Ey Complete Information >> http://click.mlb.com/ct/click?q=6e-2...uneGrQAqKqe~dU |

Kods - MLB is pretty involved with minority kids baseball thru leagues that it sponsors - called RBI leagues. And its created a baseball academy out in southern California for the kids.
MLB is working to draw more kids to baseball but its still a slow process. |

I think a lot of it has to do with the simple geography of a city. It's a lot easier to find a basketball hoop than it is to find a place to play baseball. Then you add in the fact that 2-0n-2 basketball is competive, where it takes at least 8 or more kids to make baseball any fun at all.
I think (just IMO) baseball would be better served by directing their focus away from the urban areas. Grow interest in smaller cities/towns and rural areas. And of course the Carribean/Central America region. |

Hey guys,
Until now, I didn't even think about this game. $50!? Gulp. The Redbirds are talking to me about my 2007 ticket package. They are doing things I like. Spivey is gone. Sheaffer is gone. I may like the team again? If I can meet some of you, I will try to help with tickets, or whatever? I'm always here, so far. They also have a $30 exhibition game against the Redbirds. coop |

I tried to buy tickets for the exhibition game today (30th) and was told they were sold out. If you can get 2 for me Coop thru your contacts, it would be very much appreciated.
I was able to get 2 for the Cards-Indians game on the 31st. Way down in the LF corner - Section 122, row F. |

Kods - While doing some research on the "Civil Rights" Game, I came across the following article on the Academy that was built in Compton, California. That was the first one built and it looks like another one will be constructed in DC. And Selig has visions of building several more.
Here's a link to the article (2/28/06) - MLB unveils Urban Youth Academy - Selig helps christen new facility in Compton, Calif. By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com |
