Why is it the Federal government can almost always convict someone one perjury/obstruction of justice, but almost never convict them of the crimes they were originally charged with?

Inept, destructive, careless...

Bonds' indictment sparks talk throughout baseball - USATODAY.com

I think they just go for the easier conviction in court. A lot of guilty people are convicted that way.

he was never charged with anything previously. he was testifying in a criminal investigation. he actually had immunity. he just couldn't lie.

I somewhat disagree with the slant that fed prosecutors are inept. My take is that they don't bother with much beyond an iron-clad case. Based on the lack of severity of the offense, Bonds may want to be checking on the weather forecast for places like Yankton, South Dakota, where the Bureau of Prisons has converted Yankton College (Lyle Alzado's alma mater...how ironic!!) into a penal facility.

Actually, Yankton is a great place.....on the outside.

I'm sure not all are. It just smacks of chest-thumping the way the feds often fail to get a conviction, then turn around and nail somebody for perjury/obstruction. Kinda like how state prosecutors fail in a criminal case, yet somehow succeed on the civil charges (money). 'course maybe that's the dumb jury's fault.
