Cards turn down option on Taguchi BY JOE STRAUSS AND DERRICK GOOLD / ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

smartness. If we don't trade away any OF's, he would be unneeded anyway. If some OF's ARE traded, he could be an okay backup, though for less than a mil, hopefully.

Even though I like So, I think Skip Schumaker can bring more to the table at this time. And Skip will be about 500K cheaper.

And 11 years younger. And better in pretty much every facet of the game except range (although he catches more of what he gets to). Why would we pay more to get someone less good? Skip can be expected to potentially improve...39 year old OF's almost never do.

I don't know what the stats show, but I saw Skip cover a lot of ground in Memphis. Most of the time he didn't have much help.

Keep in mind that the Cards have done this with Taguchi in the past. It is a good way to free up roster space until the rule 5 draft is over. Taguchi is under the Card's control so all they have to do is offer him a contract at a later date. My guess is that unless there is a significant trade for an OFer, So will be back.
