What started this investigation was a published report that Jeff Suppan, whenever he is in the area, loads up on hoagies from Phil and Jim's sandwich shop, practically an institution on Edgmont Avenue for almost 40 years in Parkside.

"That's news to me," said the owner, Gus Guasperini, when told of Jeff's fondness for his sandwiches. "I wouldn't know the guy if he walked in the front door."

That's because Jeff Suppan is the kind of man he is, explains his uncle.

After the World Series, Jeff Suppan flew to Rome. He had a Cardinals jersey in his luggage, hoping to present it to Pope Benedict XVI who, after all, once had been a cardinal. Unfortunately, Suppan's luggage had been lost, and even though he had an audience with the Pope, he wasn't able to deliver the jersey.

By the way, after his stellar World Series performance, Suppan became a free agent. Reports indicate he'll likely sign a contract worth $36 to $40 million over four years. That'll buy a lot of hoagies.
