Even though the Cubbies are in town today, stlkat and I are heading down to Springfield to watch playoff baseball tonight and tomorrow. It might be the only chance that we have this year (if you know what I mean).

It turned out to be a "short" road trip, as the Missions of San Antonio won Saturday's game and clinched the Texas League Championship with a 11-7 win.
We arrived at the park in the top of the first and the Missions were already up 1-0. Before we had a chance to sit down it was 3-0. The starter for Springfield, Adam Daniels, only last 1-1/3 innings before getting removed with the bases loaded in the second. Eric Haberer promptly served up a fat one and San Antonio cleared the bases on him with a double, making it 7-0. All the runs were charged to Daniels. Haberer struggled thru the next couple of innings but didn't give up any runs. Meanwhile, the Cardinals were imitating the big club. NO HITTING. Zippo for 6+ innings till Allen Craig finally broke up the no-hitter. By the bottom of the 9th, it was 11-0 as most of the bullpen couldn't get the job down, except for our friend Kyle McClellan. He came on in the 8th with the bases loaded and got out of the jam by inducing a flyout to left fielder Cody Haerther. Cody led off the 9th with a solid hit to right. Amaury Marti promptly blasted one over the LF wall for two runs. The Cards kept coming at the Missions and cranked in 5 more runs and I was starting to believe I was going to witness a 2nd Saturday Night Miracle (see Arkansas-Little Rock 2006). After Mark Shorey blasted a ball off the wall in right center for one of the runs, I thought for sure it was going to happen. But after batting around, Cody popped out weakly to the 1B in foul territory. Marti followed with another out and it was over. 11-7 Missions. We ducked out of the stadium instead of watching the Missions celebration on the field. In the midst of this defeat, we did get some great news from one of our favorite players. I'll have a seperate thread on that bit of news later.
