Default MLS Expansion Concept

There's a rumor that the MLS wants to put an expansion team in Philadelphia by 2009, and this inspired me to make this:

As you can see, the main theme I was going for is "NASL-style". The retro-styled lettering, a number in front of the jersey, etc. There's a bit of a story behind the primary logo: Originally I was going to name the team P-09, the city's initial and the year the team will start playing, so I made the P,0,and 9 look like a goalie's hands catching a ball. There are some clubs in Oceania with names like that, and Houston almost went this direction too (sort of). The words "Philadelphia Professional Soccer" were always on the logo, but I figured that that name could be shortened to "Pros", which I thought was a cool-sounding, underused name. Let me know what you think and I'll see if I can improve on it.

My sense is that it's just too retro. MLS is thoroughly in the "traditionalist" mode and any kit and name needs to stay in line with that.

Additionally, the (light) red-white-and-blue just isn't going to fly. It's so WC94 and Bush 41, you know.

If Philadelphia gets a team, I think that sticking with the local "Eagles/76ers" type theme would be appropriate a la New England.

I see bronze and something with a bell.

Here is their road kit:

I am somewhat aware of the "traditionalist" setting that the MLS has established; for instance, I noticed that all the teams' numbers are the same font, and they are always white with black trim on the home kits and black with no trim on the roadies, with the exception of Chivas USA's home kit, which has gold numbers. And since Adidas makes the uniforms, you can expect to see their trademarked 3-Stripes pattern on all of the jerseys, shorts, and socks. I'm sure Philly's soccer team wouldn't look much like this, but it would sure sell a lot of merchandise.

One more thing, what's Bush 41?
