Default Goodbye SuperSonics - owner admits they wanted to leave all along

Local News | Sonics minority owner says team destined for Oklahoma City | Seattle Times Newspaper

Quote:
McClendon said in a profile published today by The Journal Record, "we didn't buy the team to keep it in Seattle; we hoped to come here."

Sonics principal owner Clay Bennett and McClendon each issued statements today downplaying McClendon's remark.

McClendon said his comment to the Oklahoma City business newspaper reflected his "personal desire concerning NBA basketball in Oklahoma City" and said "it cannot in any way be interpreted to mean the organization has not exhaustively pursued every reasonable avenue to get an arena deal done and keep the Sonics and Storm in Seattle."
It was a great 40 years and its a real shame it is going to end this way. From pleas for a better lease to demanding the best stadium and lease ever. They are gone, and as a former employee, I will miss them a bit.

A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement.

I don't blame Bennett nearly as much as I blame Howard Schultz. Bennet is the hit man. Schultz hired him. Schultz is a petty bitter man.

Default Next stop - Oklahoma City

No hard feelings for the fans in OK City- they didn't do anything wrong. That doesn't mean that I would be sorry to hear that Clay Bennett or one of his gang members got hit by a truck. The real dirty story of this whole episode will come out some day and make a great read. Now Seattle is on the outside looking in, perched on the fence, waiting to vulture a team from some other unfortunate city.
