Lately it comes out that the Mariners are desperately seeking a LF/DH that is also lefthanded. Not a surprise really, but let's take a look at who is generating interest.
Luis Gonzalez Cliff Floyd Aubrey Huff was a sidebar item at Prospect Insider a few days ago. None are all that inspiring. My own CocoCrisp idea isn't inspiring either. And there is still Ben Broussard. Any of these guys satisfactory? You can vote for more than one if you like.

I suppose out of all of those, I'd have to stick with Brouusard. With the right platoon mate, I think he would put up the best numbers next year. I don't think his 2nd half with the Mariners is really indicative of what he can actually do in Safeco. At least, I hope not.

well there is no decent lefty pop - so just go with the next-best affordable option. If we are seriously thinking of getting Gonzales then why not just ask Olerud to come outta retirement for like 2mill for a season - i'm sure the two would be a wash when the years totals are shown.

Olerud didn't hit 50 some doubles last year?

I wouldn't look that far back, just look at his last three years.
RC/27 of 6.2/5.7/4.8 and last year with a unusually low HR/F rate he did manage 15 HR and 52 doubles. That would have been something like 20 and 45 with a more normal distribution instead of the 6%.

Broussard, by default.
2 are too old. Crisp will take too much from us, if not because Boston is stingy, but because we're the Mariners. That leaves Huff and Broussard. With pitching being ridiculously expensive to get, gotta go with the cheaper option, which I would believe is Broussard, correct? The only bat im remotely interested in, in this offseason, is Jose Cruz Jr. Problem is, Hargrove will probably hurt his value in some way. Willie Bloomquist gets first dibs off the bench. |

I would feel a lot better about everyone's confidence in Broussard if he had shown any ability to hit consistently while wearing a Mariner uniform. A few home runs and a .230 batting average doesn't cut it. We got that much out of Crazy Carl.

Isn't it possible that Broussard, while clearly not the club's savior, just had a tough couple of months (164 ABs) after being traded out of his comfort zone?
I mean, c'mon, though he isn't an all-star, do you really think he's a .238 hitter? Even with that .238 average, the worst part about his 164 ABs is the 45/9 K/BB rate. That's a lot of whiffs in 176 PAs and the walks are about half as many as you'd like to see as a minimum. But Ben was 39 for 164. Not 120 for 510, or anything substantial. Heck, if he had just one more hit per week as a Mariner than he actually had, he'd have hit .286 and without a change in the walks, his OBP would have been a respectable .330. ONE HIT A WEEK. He also posted an ISOP of almost .200, which is what he was doing with Cleveland. The Jake helped him out, and maybe Safeco Field gets him (career .584 OPS there), but we can't say Ben wouldn't be an asset to the Mariners after 164 at-bats. As cheap as he's going to be, about 4-4.5 million via arby, he's a much better option than any of the above names, and it's not even close when you consider the financial committments everyone else requires in order to obtain. |
