Default Mariners still talking extension with JoGuillen

The Seattle Times: Sports: Mariners Blog

Quote:
... could the arrival of Jones impact contract talks with Guillen? I could imagine so. That said, last I heard, they were going well and the club was dangling something like two years plus an option. Heard Bill Bavasi on the radio saying there were no extension talks and he didn't know where these things get started. Oh I don't know, I suppose we all just pull it out of our ears. Remember, many of you were wondering a couple of days ago why we wrote that Jones would be up by Friday when the team seemed to be indicating otherwise.
So maybe yes, but maybe no. What I'm wondering is why you would want to extend a guy who made comments that will make a hot prospect's landing a little harder? Why would you extend a player that will make it more difficult for the roster to maintain Bavasi's idea of one position player up every year?

And Wiggen, I'm waiting to read it somewhere else, but I have heard news that will make you happy

C'mon Bedir - you can't leave me hanging like that! Spill!

Does it involve another minor league prospect?

Yes. One you like. It was something said at the USSM/LL gathering, but none have published so I don't know that their special guest in Tacoma wanted it shared. Goose was there and he might share, but who knows.

I'm gonna try to find out today if I have permission to share stuff.

I will say this Wiggen, it involves Balentien and it's something that completely shocked everybody when Bavasi told us.

Edit:
Ok I got permission to share information on certain things, one of them being the Balentien thing.

Remember how we all thought that the Mariners had to carry Wlad on the club next year or deal him because he's out of options? Well, it turns out that's not true. Wlad still has an option left. A not very well known rule about option it turns out. Some kind of technicality having to do with the total amount of games he's played in the minors or something. So the Mariners do not have to carry him on the big club next year.

That flexibility is huge. Particularly with the number of guys coming off the roster after 2008.

That is good news. It allows them to give Balentien a couple of months next year at Tacoma to see if he's the real deal (I think he is, but then you know that).

If they extend Guillen, then Balentien has no place to play - unless they decide he converts to first base. I have my doubts about Lahair. Clement is another possibility at first, but I think it's more likely he's the backup catcher and sometime dh next season.

Bedir - who comes off after 2008? Is it both Sexson and Beltre? Anybody else?

after 2008 the following contracts are off the books

Sexson - 14M$ in '08
Johjima - 5.2M$ in '08
Ibanez - 5.5M$ in '08
Broussard as '08 is his last year of Arbie
HoRam as '08 is his last year of Arbie
Willie Bloomquist - .95M$ in '08
Jason Davis as '08 is his last year of Arbie

Guillen has an option for '08
Reitsma has an option for '08

Related is that Vidro's vesting option was guarunteed so he waived his no-trade. He is done in '09. Also both YuBet and JoLop signed deals that extend them for some time.
