Default adam jones called up

Adam Jones to join the Mariners on Friday
This just in. Adam Jones is being called up. He will join the club Friday.
The Mariners, who made the announcement after their 12-inning 8-7 win over the Angels Wednesday, say they don't want to talk about his role just yet.
Jones, the club's top hitting prospect, had 24 homers and 83 RBIs for Triple-A Tacoma.

Is it real this time?

It will be intriguing to see how he's used, especially in light of McLaren's contradictory statements regarding Sexson

And, according to Geoff Baker's blog in the Times, Jose Guillen isn't happy about it.

Obviously he will be welcomed by the veterans with open arms.

If there ever was a vet on this team with a win at any cost mentality, I would have thought it was Jose Guillen. Odd that he's objecting to a move to make the team better.

Well, there's a reason the guy has been with so many teams and why hardly anybody is ever sorry to see him go.

At least Guillen is hitting and competing. I am a lot more concerned about Richie Sexson who looks completely clueless. They could solve a big piece of the playing time puzzle in the short run by diagnosing him with something and giving him a 15 day rest. It couldn't hurt.

In light of what Jose Guillen said in the media about Jones coming up this was rather odd to read

Quote:
I spoke with a couple of veterans in the clubhouse after the move was announced and they were concerned. “I know he has good numbers and he deserves to be up here, but where is he going to play?” asked one. Despite the questions I do not see that there will be any problems. When I asked Guillen now that Jones is here what do you do, he answered, “Nothing. He is here and he is family now.”

Jose won’t leave it at that, and I mean that in a good sense. When I talked to Adam in spring training I asked which veterans had been helping him out. He answered Ichiro (who liked to talk about hip hop) and Jose Guillen. For his part, Jose grabbed Adam during batting practice and talked to him for about five minutes behind the cages. When they were done, they shook hands.

As for Adam, he is taking it all in stride. Don't get me wrong, he is excited to be here in the middle of a playoff push. He listened eagerly when Ken Baron who translates for Ichiro approached him and told him how Ichiro likes to handle the outfield and when to get out of the way. He was the first one out on the bench pregame.
Interesting nuggest as well as to how Ichiro is connecting to Jones, the same way he connected to Mike Cameron.

I thought Jones had a very nice debut last night. Unfortunately he's on the bench tonight.

Man is he a good looking kid! If he has any success at all, you'd like to see him cash in with endorsement deals.

I think it is important too that a young African-American is up and starting, even if only occaissionally. Baseball hasn't been marketing itself well to that community recently.

More McLaren news? Well, Adam Jones won't play tomorrow. Raul Ibanez goes to left field. But Jones does play on Sunday, with Ichiro getting a rest as DH and Jones moving to center.

Jones certainly stated his case with the two singles and two runs scored and I do think this team looks better off with him on the roster. The John McLaren era was supposed to be all about more lineup flexibility and it looks like we are finally going to see it. He played it relatively conservative for the first month of his tenure, probably trying not to scare anyone. But now, this is his team. He has a better feel -- a managerial feel as opposed to that of a bench coach -- of its pulse and is going to do some unorthodox (for Seattle, anyway) stuff to get the wins he needs.
I like the hint at more lineup flexibility. Maybe Jose Lopez can sit a little as well?

Jones needs to play six days a week. Matsuzaka might be a good guy for him to miss.

I'd play Jones 6 days a week too. Lopez is a puzzle to me. If you recall, he did the same thing last year - a hot first half and then cold as ice the second half - although not as bad as so far this year. That's why I thought the idea for picking up Mark Loretta was a pretty good one.

Loretta would have been a decent bench bat to add. He would offer even more lineup flexibility and late inning replacement opportunities.
