Within the next two weeks the Mariners are going to determine how much in this race they are. it will effect their drive to pursue the top available talent via trade with the excellent offensive farm system they have right now.
So what do the next 15 games look like? 3 @ home v Balt 41-50 3 @ Toronto 45-46 4 @ Texas 39-52 4 @ home v Oakland 44-48 1 @ home v Anaheim, the 31st will be post deadlin, 55-36 Weighted winning percentage is .471, even if the team is really just a .500 level team they should win 8, but there is a great possibility of 10+ wins over this stretch. If the club is at 60+ wins at the deadline they can buy and buy big.

Angels = .504
Indians = .503 Twins = .562 That's the major competition for the playoffs at this time. The Mariners are best suited for a short pre-deadline run. This should translate to them being buyers, hopefully the run doesn't make them complacent.

I remain unconvinced that there is anybody out there worth a top level prospect (and I would argue we only have three - Jones, Balentien, and Clement, if you assume Triunfel is not in the picture).
You might be able to get something second tier level for a lesser package - say something including Jeremy Reed - but that's it. |

What Wiggen said.
Though with the rumors that the Mariners are talking to Guillen about an extension(why?), we may see something happen soon....

Are either of you familiar that Roy Oswalt has said that if he's asked he will accept a deal, and that there are rumors that the Minnesota Twins may have to deal Santana?

Oswalt? Santana?
I'm not sure we have enough to get either one should they become available. I think there are teams with so much more to offer - teams with much, much deeper farm systems that could probably include pitching - that I think both are pipe dreams, even if they are available. |

I don't really see Santana going anywhere. Yeah the Twins are cheap, but I think they'll shell out the money for the best pitcher in the game. I really don't think they can afford not too.
As far as Oswalt...yeah he'd be nice to have...but I'm a little weary of him. He's starting to go downhill a little and he's reportedly lost a few MPH on his fastball.

The Mariners are five games into this stretch and they are 3-2 and the schedule is about to get a bit easier. The Angels are 1-3 and theirs gets tougher.
