Default Trade Deadline Thread

With the deadline fast approaching (less then 3 weeks away) this is a good place to discuss all rumors that are being thrown around. Also, trade targets the M's SHOULD be going after.

If there's one realistic guy I'd like to see the M's get, it's Jeremy Guthrie of Baltimore.

However, what do you think it would take for us to get him?

I don't see the Orioles even considering trading him. Why would they?

Buehrle was the only one I had any interest in. He's off the table now. I think they should just stand pat and upgrade from within(which they've already started to do).

Getting Adam Jones in the outfield will help the pitching staff.

And there really aren't any significant upgrades out there anyways. And the ones that are I'm not willing to pay the price to acquire(IE Willis).

Looking at who the Mariners have to trade, if there were actually pitchers that were MidRotation or Better available the club has peices.

One of AdamJones/Wlad
two of Clement/RobJohnson/AdamMoore
Reed
Morse
Broussard

and ANY reliever not named Putz or Sherrill.

That's some talent

Mark Texiera a Mariner?

someone in Tex(as) thinks that Tex would be a great fit here.

Where are the contenders for Tex? | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | SportsDay: Baseball: Rangers

Might it cost Adam Jones and a pitcher, maybe even a second pitcher? You bet it would.
Of course that creates all kinds of roster situations, but if Sexson can be turned over for a pitcher (dream of dreams) then this would make a ton of sense.

Also the Mariners seem to be interested in Petitte, but the Yanks as of yet aren't giving up on him.

NJ.com: Everything Jersey

Is Petitte good enough to turn this into a championship contender?

Mark Texeira would be a great pickup for the Mariners. I would deal Jones and probably any minor league pitcher they wanted for him. He wouldn't put up the power numbers here that he does in Texas, but he'd come close.

The problem is Richie Sexson. I think the guy is done, and we're stuck with him for the next two years. I can't forsee anybody dumb enough to take him off our hands.

If we didn't have Sexson or Vidro...I'd consider it.

I don't know. We have in house upgrades for 1st base and DH, so if I deal Jones, it has to be for a pitcher, that's our bigger concern I think.

The Seattle Times: Sports: Mariners Blog

Matt Morris for Michael Saunders, than yes. For Wlad, than no. Throw in Julio Mateo while you are at it, or some other bullpen arm not named Putz, Sherrill, Morrow or Lowe

Ewww, Matt Morris?

Maybe if the Giants pay 90% of his horrible contract.

Just exactly the kind of deal the Mariners don't want to make. i'm not sure how Matt Morris gains us anything.

I'm actually of the opinion that we could use more offense - specifically some left handed power, since with the apparent demise of Raul Ibanez we have none. Which is one of the reasons we fare so much better against left handed pitching.

I don't know if there's any decent left handed bats available - my guess is probably not. Which is why it won't break my heart if we do nothing. I'd rather do nothing than make a bad trade. We've had more than our share of them.

What would the point of not acquiring a starting pitcher better than the worst starting pitcher on the staff be?

Especially at the cost of Michael Saunders?

Morris is under contract for 2008 at 9.5M$ and has a 3M$ buyout after that. But to care about that you would have to think that the Mariners aren't a top 5 revenue organization.

Because Morris isn't a big enough upgrade at the price we'd be paying him. Not to mention he'd be yet another albatross on the 2008 club.
