After the raod trip from Hell and watching the Fatherrapers (NYY) coming on strong, I'm hoping that the Mariners do not mortgage the future to add old guys.
Jones needs to come up and play. Ibanez, Vidro, and Sexson need to be sitting on the bench two days a week. The combination of grueling travel schedule and advancing age takes its toll. |

TWolf you are right on the money. My only fear is that by waiting for the entire road trip, it may be too late. There were enormous opportunities with the Angels continuing to open the door for the Mariners, who refused to walk through it. Now we are de-energized and scuffling just to stay within striking distance. BB should have realized after the last homestand that the team needed a shot in the arm, but he stood pat. AJ could have provided the lift, or a deal for help from outside the organization. But standing still has really hurt the ballclub in the past 10 days.

Jason Jennings and Matt Morris scouted by Seattle.
I'd rather the first then the last as Jennings is a groundballer, younger and cheaper.

Apparently Dye almost went to Boston today in a 3 team deal, but it fell through at the last minute. No mention of who the third team was.

Mariners in on "every pitcher available and some who aren't" to include Willis, Garland and Pettitte. Also massive underperformer Kei Igawa. The Mariners are also scouting at least two D-Rays pitchers, Edwin Jackson and Al Reyes.
I would put that collection in the following order of desirability - Pettitte, Willis, Jackson, Reyes and Garland. I like that Jackson once showed a ton of potential, and still has the possibility of being good. He does have five seasons under his belt but all but this are partial. Control issues are his biggest problem, walking 5.13/9 but he's a big strikeout guy that induces the groundball. He'd probably cost the least and have the second largest payoff if he can be fixed (Dontrelle getting fixed would be biggest), and has a low salary number and is under club control for a few more years. The Yanks obviously won't be dealing any of their staff now that they are only 5 back in the Wild Card, and one back of Seattle.

Buster Olney on ESPN Radio likens the Igawa situation to Jose Contreras. Stating that there are teams that think his 18M$ for 4 year contract is reasonable and that a number of teams put in high bids. Those GMs interested think that Igawa might fit better in a different city.
Olney states that much of his struggles might be due to the Yankees inability to bring pitchers along. "they just can not fix guys like this" Igawa may have some sense that Torre doesn't trust him in that he can open the game with 4 scoreless innings and then as soon as he walks one guy in the 5th there are three relievers warming up.

The daily update of rumors
The search for right handed relief continues, despite it being a foolish notion. Latest mentions are Octavio Dotel (2) and Al Reyes (2). Larry Stone yesterday stockpiled everyone who has been mentioned, and the dream there is still alive - Roy Oswalt. Think this situation through, but what pitcher has been more consistent as a Cy Young Contender since the turn of the century?
