U.S.S. Mariner » An extremely inadequate summary of the Feed - Seattle Mariners and general baseball discussion

This class move deserves to be noted and spread around, it is not every GM who when booked for a speaking engagement who would go out of their way like this. I've had athletes hang up on me after I called them less than one minute later than the appointment.

I liked Bill Bavasi a lot and thought he was a good pick as GM.
I still think he is a good person and an all around nice guy. However I am very disappointed in the moves he made this winter. He's fooling himself if he think this team is any better than another last place finish. I don't think there is any question that Bill Bavasi is working his last season in the Mariners organization. He took over a mess and he has just never been able to repair it. |

Correct me if I'm wrong but the M's came off a 90+ winning season when Bill came in......maybe I'm off a year. My point is that the mess was a normal mess so to speak......players getting old.
Bill has had $90M per year for a payroll budget. Sure players don't work out....a problem for every team. Bill may be a very nice man.....but he isn't very good choosing players. We are a last place team fighting to not lose more games than last year. If Bill is the right guy for the GM position, he needs employees that can make the baseball decisions for him. |

To be fair... Bill had old players and not much "impact" help ready in AAA when he took over. The organization also seems to have adjusted their contract and free-agent philosophies frequentily (although always a year late). These factors don't erase Bavasi's glaring mistakes, however.
On a side note, I don't believe we're a lock for last place and think we'll definately surpass last year's record, but that's besides the point. |

After having been critical of many off season moves I am now making an effort to keep an open mind and a willingness to apologize if this team suprises!
That being said, replacing 3/5's of the starting rotation is addition by subtraction so I am glad he made those moves even if they aren't all TOR at least they aren't cannon fodder for the AL West! Hope SPRINGS eternal! |
