So sayeth John Hickey.
Personally I would of waited till after this season was over before I decided weather or not to give him a long term deal. However, Bavasi has shown he's pretty good at these kind of things(at least he's good at something right?) so I trust that it will be a good deal. Who's next? Felix or Yubet?

YuBet would be next. He's a FA first.
This is a great move though as not only does it solidify the situation for Jose, it also increases his value in the trade market.

Isn't it a bit premature to sign a player with just one full year as a starter to a long-term contract? You already control him for the next 5 seasons. What happens if he's the next Angel Berroa - someone who has a strong rookie campaign and then fades into oblivion?
As a general matter, I think teams should always wait at least two full seasons of everyday playing time before signing a young player to a long-term deal. This isn't like basketball where you know that LeBron James and Chris Paul are going to be franchise players before they even set foot in the NBA. Lopez had an OBA of just .263 in 2004, .282 in 2005 and .319 in 2006. Sure, that's an upward trend, but how much higher is it going to go? Lopez surpassed expectations in 2006. That might have been a career year for him. |

This is actually just his last Club Control year. Next year is first year arbie, as he played half seasons in '04 and '05.
As for expectations, you are using a very small sample size and not accounting for his age. Zen, check out his minor league numbers and tell me why you think last year was the best he'll ever get, and remind me of his age while you are at it.

Jose is currently 23 years old and he won't turn 24 until after the season. His numbers are 10% better on the road than at home, but Safeco Field has psyched out some pretty good hitters.
The biggest problem is his lack of walks, not a huge problem for a guy this young. There are lots of things wrong with this team. Jose Lopez isn't one of them. |
