I like the Jennings trade idea.
Another thing that has interested me is the idea of getting Mark Mulder. I know he's coming off an injury year and won't even be ready for the start of the season but he made 7mill last year and is looking for an incentive-based deal. Any thoughts on how his arm will rebound? Any hope he could go back to the form he had the past 5 years? If so, he would be a good pickup for the M's to sign him to a low base of 5-7mill with a few more mill in incentives. I worry though will he return to form? I figure the people in-the-know would have a better idea on that than me so i'm asking. If he could return to form then he'd be a steal at 7-8mill if he reached his incentives. 200 innings, era under 4, 15+ wins... would be nice. |

Mulder would be a solid pickup based upon incentives. However, some team will probably offer him guaranteed money.
I forgot what pitcher it was but a couple of years ago, the Yanks picked up a pitcher they knew would miss an entire year and gave him guaranteed money. Anybody help me out with his name? Point is, someone will take a risk on Mulder. We aren't in the position to do it. |

I wouldn't give him guaranteed money for a few years thats for sure but i'm sure someone will - Detroit paid for Ordonez when he was coming off knee surgery that had people wondering if he'd even really play again. I'd give Mulder 1 year guaranteed at say 6mill/few mill more in incentives. I'd give him club options for the following 3 years so if we see he's rebounded we could re-sign him - give him guaranteed money for those years at 9 mill - the only way to get him to agree to this is a higher guaranteed rate for the option years. still if he went back to form - 9 mill would be a steal.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the available free agent talent is decidedly uninspiring. I have to admit that spending a fortune for Jason Schmidt does absolutely nothing for me. I think shopping for a few spear carriers is not a bad plan. I don't see any leading men out there that get me excited.

this thread is already 100% times as interesting as anything going on at the "old" M's board...
I agree that Schmidt is uninspiring. He's a very good pitcher but he strikes me as a classic guy trying to get one last big contract. He'll go wherever he gets the longest deal. Mulder may be a good idea but the risk is too high unless he comes at Frank Thomas prices. A healthy Mulder is a dominating, dominating pitcher. Lost in the shuffle is Tim Hudson, who is being shopped by Atlanta and appears to be at an all time low value-wise. He's a gutsy pitcher with something to prove. I think he might be the steal of the off-season for whomever picks him up. He has the killer instinct that Mulder never did. |

I was looking over Hudsons contract - the last 3 years are kinda ugly - think they would be willing to send like 10-15 mill in any deal? I don't wanna pay that guy 12-13mill/year, hehe. If they would send that then i'd jump on it. If we could also get Mulder for cheap we'd find ourselves with two dominating guys IF they got back into form. I realize that's a big IF but if the money is right - a low risk one.

So basically the M's are in wait and see mode, looking for scraps after the Hyenas are done.
I still dont see how many can trust Schmidt's word, after what he did last time. Mulder would be awesome for an incentive based deal, but where is his interest directed to? I have no clue, does anyone? Jennings via trade would be good, if not because hes a pretty good value pitcher...but because the Rockies FO are lacking intelligence just as much as our FO is. We might not get screwed over in a trade, for once! My worry is that if the M's are playing the wait and see game...they might miss out on all the right targets. I find it hard to believe the M's are the only team in baseball that finds Ohka as a good value. We're not that smart. (albeit they have thrown out feelers everywhere...so much so that im surprised they dont have a sexual harassment suit)... : D Good to see the good group of guys from other place around here. Thanks for inviting me! |
