Default Helton being dealt

Monfort. Rockies CEO, has confirmed that the team is thinking about dealing Todd Helton.

They are doing this because Helton is owed 90M$ over five more seasons. They are attempting to both shed his contract while maintaining the team. Helton has a no-trade clause, and the organization's primary concern is the financial aspect of the deal. Recall that on average a team sending a 10M$ pr year contract out takes 50% or so of dollars back in other contracts or cash, or both.

Rockies fans don't think they have a firstbaseman at this time.

So the questions that arrise are

1-If Helton can be dealt, why can't Sexson?
2-If the Rockies need a first baseman, don't we have at least two?
3-Should the Mariners go after Helton to send Sexson to the RedSox?
4-Have I been drinking again?

Seems the Red Sox aren't that interested.

From Rotoworld:

Quote:
A source told the Boston Herald that the Rockies are driving the Todd Helton talks with the Red Sox and that Boston isn't particularly motivated to make a deal.

That makes sense. If the Rockies were willing to pay half of the $90 million that Helton is owed and take back a package similar to what the Phillies got for Bobby Abreu last summer, then the Red Sox could jump. It doesn't make much sense to give up top prospects for an expensive first baseman on the decline. Even if Helton can bounce back a bit in 2007, it figures that he'll be an average regular at best in the final two years of his deal, which runs through 2011.

I don't see this deal happening at all.

I just don't see how it is a good move for the Red Sox.

But the Red Sox are crazy. That's why the have Lugo playing ss for 36 mill instead of Hanley Ramirez for a few hundred thousand.

Because they got a big name in Beckett. OOooo, gotta have those big names. Very stupid move in hindsight for Boston. Beckett has been garbage for them so far and who would have ever thought Lowell would be the better part of that deal after the first year? Yikes.

Funny how Boston is now the Yankees and the Yankees all of the sudden morphed into a frugal and well run team. Question now has to be, who is the "Evil Empire"? The Yanks who cut payroll this offseason and are consentrating heavily on developing their own talent? ...Or the Red Sox who dumped 220+ million into FA's this winter and now are linked to Helton (and the 90 million he has in tow)?

Things change so quickly.

You'd think we would be able to talk the Red Sox into a Sexson deal.

I'd take Delcarmen, thrown in a few mill and make it happen.

If I had to choose between dealing Beltre or Sexson I choose Sexson in a heartbeat.

Helton is really falling off especially in the power debt. 15 HRs (546 ABs) in 2006 while playing in Coors for 82 games. Ouch.

He still is a good doubles hitter but I imagine that will go to pot too if he started playing in Fenway.

I kinda take Helton's 2006 with a grain of salt. He was pretty sick (even spent some time in the hospital) for the first few months of the year. That's bound to affect anybody's power.

I'm guessing the talks broke down because the Red Sox wouldn't include Delcarmen.

Like the Rockies are dumb enough to trade Helton for Lowell and Tavares???
