We spend $11M more than I thought the budget was.......for a total of $34M on new players. We didn't get one star player and most of them are coming off an injury. I'm not positive but I think our Payroll is above $100m....maybe $102M. The choice of players have been horrid, pitiful, maybe plan stupid.
Can you imagine a $100M team that finished in the cellar? This Billy at his best....what does Lincoln have to say? |

The sad thing is that this team has absolutely no long term plan.
They are trying for a quick fix. There is some decent talent on this team but this isn't a team that is going to compete for a division title. We have a ridiculous payroll for a team that at best could win 85 games and I don't even see that happening. This is a sad, sad, sad organization. We are going to have a string of last place finishes to go with the 3 we already have. |

Running a baseball team (into the ground) is just their day jobs. Here's what Beavis, Butthead, and Meathead are really all about:

I've been asking myself why a franchise would rather pay $8 million dollars apiece for two mediocre players when they could have one really good player for $16 million. Then the answer came to me.
It's because if you sign the 16 million player, then you still need to add somebody else. Even if you spend only a couple of million dollars for a fill in, you're 2 million dollars worse off than you would have been with the two mediocre guys. Not much of an answer, but I can't think of any other reason. Of course, there's always the possibility that mediocre guys are the only ones who will come here and that the good players shun us like the plague. |

I'm sure some players will not play here but many will if you pay the asking price. For sure they won't come here if the money in less.
You can wonder about the choice of players.....I think they will not pay the asking price for top players but then can justify paying full price for a 2nd tier player because they saved money. Last edited by hot rod; 01-28-2007 at 07:59 PM. |

This FO has paid full price on at least two players, offered full price to Ken as well. All were top tier.
The problem is not the money that they spend, but how they spend it, and who they feel is top tier.

Who were they?
This year, Zito. Beltre and Sexson were both FULL PRICED, if that's the term you want to use. The M's didn't seriously bid on Jason Schmidt, inexplicably. The front officeisn't afriad to spend the total dollars. But they sure don't want to be the ones breaking a record and they have no interest in giving any player 18 million a year right now. If Ichiro demands 18 mil per year guaranteed, they won't do it and Ichiro will be wearing a Yankees, Mets, Dodgers or Red Sox uniform in 2008. The problem here isn't the amount of money they ultimately spend, it's manner in which they think is the best in which to spend it, and the players they are spending it on. It's the whole "would you rather have five Toyota Camrys, a BMW and a Mercedes, or seven Camrys and a Toyota Tacoma for the same price?" The suits love the Camry I guess, and I'm sure the Tacoma is for Howie the third. |

The team routinely finishes with less wins than Pythag says they should. Is that Jason's fault?

Sorry but I owe Jason a couple.
I've seen Ben Broussard play more than most here (because I follow the Indians) but I'm so wrong in my assesment of him, according to Churchill. Ben Broussard is complete garbage, especially for what we are paying him. He is going to sit on the bench this season and make some pretty nice coin. |

No one on this board owes anyone anything other than respect, and well made arguements. We don't need to stick it to each other.

Exactly bedir. When I start getting it from JAC he'll get some in return.
I'll leave it at that. Now I'll just go back to being the respectful poster that I'm known as. Of course Marinerman might join us here and that'll screw that up. |
