Well, I'm grateful that you included me in that group.

It will great once the season starts and we can start talkin' about some real games.

Yeah, it's a little slow going at the moment, but this place will really pick up once ST starts I think.

I hope so too. I haven't made a post at Scout since the return of Fanhome.

I like the format here and I like the posters who have joined so far.

jason....we didn't offer full price to Zito. We offered $99M after Texas had offered over $100M to him weeks before.

I thought this discussion was about this year. Although I don't consider Sexson 1st tier but we did pay list price maybe more. Beltre was a 1st tier player at the time and was paid what we thought he was worth. The juice business wasn't understood and I agreed with the acquistion. Certainly, wish he was back on roids.

IMO....the only 1st tier player we have is Ichiro. His payroll has been very fair.

I don't really think Beltre was on roids.....

And I would argue that $99M is full price for Zito. There is a difference between full price and crazy money.

Goose....with all due respect----Beltre had a contract year that was awsome compared to every other year. I guess its possible to have a dinger exposion but doubt it. Sorta happened like Boone's contract year. He was taking something or dang lucky. I don't think someone can hit 50+ dingers with luck.

If you are dealing for players I think you have to offer at least the same as others to persuade a player your way especially a cellar dweller. So my feeling is that if you offer a lower amount there was another reason to get involved other than acquiring the player. I think Billy wants the FO and fans think hes is in the mix-IMO.

Regarding people being here by invitation - anybody remember the old Groucho Marx line where he said he wouldn't belong to any club that would have somebody like him as a member?

Well my bet is that the Grocho Marx brothers could pick better baseball players than Billy and his group. At least we would laugh instead of cry.

The last time i went into a baseball season with such low expectations was the Liquid Plummer year (1992). We went through two horrible seasons and finally developed a solid young core and now we have just gone through the offseason from hell, where they spent a lot of money on mediocre or over the hill old players. We don't have a playoff caliber team and we are further away from having a playoff team in 2008 than we would have been if they had just kept the team we had at the end of last year together., (not that I miss Gil Meche and Joel Pineiro for what they are getting paid).
